for @militarytrash bc itās johns birthday and alex is feeling like being nice?
The wrapping was awful, but the bow around the small box was fairly neat. She got that part right. Of course Alex had known it was coming up, and for a good few weeks sheād searched around for something that would feel enough to give him after everything they had been through. But nothing seemed like a decent gesture. She wouldāve asked him, if she could remember how.
Of all her weapons, her silenceĀ was the most violent.
Inside the box were the last things with her birth name burned into them, the dog tags she had worn around her neck for years before being identified would be too dangerous. In her line of work it was a talent to be invisible and untraceable, not that anyone else was around to miss her if something went wrong. Not till now.
Ā Ā Ā ā I wanted you to have them. Nothing else felt right.ā
Pieces of her were still terrified he might wake up one morning and realise where he was, what happened, and the monster he shared his space with. Yet if she kept working, he would be safe. If she kept this up, she could have him around. He stood by through her recovery, through her periods of hating herself and him for acting like everything would be alright. John was trying though, and that was more than could be said for her pathetic attempt at processing.
Ā Ā Ā ā Guess this way you have something of me around when I inevitably go distant on you.ā
Joking about it was definitely too soon, but she had a feeling he might appreciate hearing the joke none the less. Her laugh was strained, it was going to take a while to settle back in.
Ā Ā Ā ā Iām sorry. Iām sorry I had nothing to say, and that I still donāt. And Iām sorry for lying to you, trying to keep you safe is... itās what I was trained to do.ā
Alex didnāt have to tell him the truth for him to know what those words meant.
