Innately Drawn | John & Sabine

Flipping to a new page in his sketchbook, John rubs the end of his pencil into an angled point, giving him a broader range of line and shading possibilities. “Lucky for you, I’m good at multitasking.” He can sketch and talk about rugby at the same time, just like he could sketch at keep and ear on his dad to make sure he wasn’t hurting Harry, just like he could protect Harry and keep up on his homework enough to not fail. He’s good at dividing his attention.
“Hm, well, if you insist on leaving in the middle of our heated discussion, Fosters is in this glass, but I wouldn’t mind a Strongbow followup.” He lifts his eyes from his page to both give her a quick smile and to get another look at the shape of her nose. He doesn’t have a particular method for sketching, nor a preferred style for painting. Right now he wants to sketch from the inside out - physically and metaphorically.
He laughs at her jab towards forwards, and he shakes his head as he turns his attention more fully towards the sketch he’s starting. “I played two positions,” he says, working the curve of a nostril and then the bridge of her nose. “Also please keep moving. I’m going for expression right now, not an exact replica.” He smiles reassuringly, blue eyes flicking up for a moment before looking back down. “I was eighthman and inside center. Which isn’t all that impressive, given that it was just secondary school, but I hated being tied down to one spot. Plus there was really one position that played to what I could do physically. I wasn’t bulky like the forwards and I wasn’t fast enough to be the wings. I liked being in the middle. Supporting the rest of ‘em.”
She can’t help but find it a bit unnerving to have him looking at her as though she were the art. Sabine knows that her looks can get her places, but the mere act of existence has her doubting a lot. Being never enough for her family left her always a step short of full confidence. It was easy enough to pretend, but having someone else study her this intensely was more difficult than she wanted to admit to herself.
Smiling in return to him, she laughs too, their voices mingling for a moment before she shifts again (sitting still isn’t a strong suit either). Taking a sip of her own, Sabine shakes her head and laughs again quieter this time. “There’s nothin’ wrong with playing on a secondary school team. We all start somewhere. And I suppose there’s that whole bullshite some coaches say about ‘as long as you had fun’ and all.”
“I get that we’re all important and all, but when was the last time you saw a forward make a try?” Raising her eyebrows, she tries to steal a look at the sketch before quickly jerking her head away. No matter how flattered she was, she knew looking at the sketch would only make her stop him. He was too cute to abandon this early. “But yeah. I’m sure you were indispensable.”

Tyson waited as instructed, nervously fidgeting with the ring of his right middle ring, as though waiting to be scolded, but he didn’t take his eyes off of Tasha. He didn’t think she’d hurt him, but Tyson felt as though looking away was somehow dangerous. An irrational seed of fear that refused to be shaken away. As she wrote, Tyson ran through everything he’d said in his own mind, trying to remember anything he might have missed. Someway that he hadn’t done enough, something he should have paid more attention to.
His gallows expression brightened immeasurably when Tasha said that he was doing a great job, and then crumpled in wounded confusion. Tyson knew there was more that he could have done. He should have tried harder to figure out how tall the two men were or to look at their faces from his perch, rather than vaguely guessing at their ages. It had felt like so much information in his mind, but saying it out loud, Tyson felt pitifully empty-handed. His quest to find a trustworthy officer completed, the teenager had deflated and lacked the courage to openly disagree with Tasha.
“Yeah, that’s all correct, Ma’am.” He nodded along as the officer read back his information. “I, um… Sometimes, I do. Not usually as big as this, but occasionally, yeah. I don’t mean to, I just… don’t always get noticed,” Tyson said, as he tucked his arms closer to his body defensively at her question, fidgeting with his ring whilst his hand rested against his heart; hammering with fearful energy he’d been tapping down since spotting the other officer walking into the alleyway. “M-My history teacher says I have a good eye for detail,” Tyson blurted out, trying to justify himself and then flushing with embarrassment at his rushed words.
She had never particularly liked kids. Of course, she never really found a reason to like most people. The facade of gentle officer was difficult to keep up, at least in the beginning. Sabine had finally slid into the patterns of her cover, a few kind words in a direct discussion had become common nature. Assuring the boy was more than just insurance, she didn’t want him to be hurt and she couldn’t figure out why. Maybe she was growing a conscience, something unfortunate for her position. She threw away these thoughts easily.
Smiling at him as he continued, she nodded thoughtfully. “Well, I’m glad you came to me with this information. You can always come to us if you see anything more.” It was a dangerous habit he had, but she wasn’t about to tell him to stop. Being careful? Yes. But stopping could cut off this potential flow of information (in the great unlikelihood that he actually listened to her on it), which would be a detriment.
“You definitely do have that eye, I agree. This is all very good.” She studied his behavior, knowing he had something he needed to let out soon. She had always been one to violently outburst, but he didn’t seem the type. “And you don’t have to call me Ma’am. Tasha is fine. But if you’re squeamish about first names, Officer Stokes is fine too. Alright?”

‘ we’ve made such a mess of this place; there’s blood stains on your face. ’
He wasn’t wrong, the usually near-sterile room was soiled, red pooling on the floor. Sabine’s loyalty never wavered, though less could be said for the man slumped in the centre of the room. They knew who their mole was now. She rubbed a hand against her cheek, looking then at the smear. “At least it’s an easy clean. I’ll handle it.”

“We’ll figure it out. Okay?” He gives her a quick smile, trying to be emotional stability for her. “Together, yeah?” Personally, he’s glad that Jim’s dead. Things are going to change, but John’s planning on being long gone by then. Or in a position that will let him swing through the chaos largely unaffected. “We don’t have to decide tonight. Let’s just take this a step at a time. You want tea? Something stronger?”
She catches her breath, knowing that she’s placing too much on his shoulders. It’s not her place to be compromised and he’s far too kind to tell her off for it. He deserves better than an emotionally damaged murderer. “I’m fine. I don’t need anything.” A double entendre, both being lies. She needed everything from him and something warm in her hands wouldn’t hurt. For his own reasons, Jim had saved her. And further, he let her save John. It wasn’t a kindness she could forget. She waits, letting the silence nearly crush them. “You should go. Regardless of what I do, you should go.”

Chuckling as he gets to his feet, Bastian just shakes his head. ❝ I’ll leave you to think that, love. Don’t want to bruise that ego of yours. ❞ It comes with the name, doesn’t it? The fact that every MORAN he’s met are egotistical and so far up there own arses that it’s a surprise anything else could fit up there. With an order of a bottle of scotch, he takes the bottle and two glasses filled with ice back to the table he’s got with Sabine, placing the bottle and glasses in the centre. ❝ Don’t think I remember the last time I was actually happy ‘bout gettin’ plastered on me birthday. ❞
“Prick-” she speaks offhandedly through a smile. She wants to return the jab but merely grins, a quiet laugh shaking her shoulders. Anyone else and she would have snapped, but with Bastian, it was hardly an insult. With his return, she’s happy to serve, pouring them both a generous glass. Sure, sure. Scotch is meant to be enjoyed, savoured, but they’re far enough in that taste is merely a side effect to their goal. “Well you know, most things are more enjoyable with me. You’re welcome.” Sabine holds her glass up in cheers. “To this gangly bastard-” a pause “You deserve something good.”

he drank in her warmth, the cold a little less daunting now. eyes hold steady on the constellation, stars twinkling above.

as he watched the stars, sab couldn’t help but turn to watch him. it was comforting to watch something so normal happen between them.

it’s quiet and offhanded, she turns back to the sky as he points.
“and so- she sacrifices her daughter then what? if her pride was her downfall, i wouldn’t think she’d get away with this.”

It’s less Andrew’s ego getting in the way and more his severe dislike of being touched, but he lets her do it because there’s a sliver of trust between them, at least, and because the faster he gets on his feet, the sooner she’ll let him go. Then again, as soon as he’s on his feet, the whole world pitches to the side, and Andrew swears, grasping a hand against Sabine’s arm and the mangled side of the overturned vehicle. “How far do we have to walk?” he asks, jaw tight.
“Hey, hey-” she’s softer now, the worry seeping back into her voice. As much as they both pretended he was just another soldier, she’d accepted him into her team and that meant she invested herself into him. Sabine grips more tightly onto him as he wavers. “I want us to meet up with the others and then there’s a- there’s an outcropping with some decent cover. Five kilometers maybe?” She needs to keep him upright. “We can go slow. Don’t strain yourself.”

He’s never been one to care about his birthday. Never really wanted to celebrate it — it’s just another year and another number. What was so special about turning forty-three ( besides the reminder that he’s two years from forty-five and never thought he’d live to see the day. ) But this year. He wants to celebrate. ❝ C’mon, I’ll get you another. Think we should hit the hard liquor, don’t you? ❞
The last time she’d been invited to celebrate someone’s birthday, it was a family friend and she’d only been invited as to not create a scene. Though an angry six-year-old seemed to stir things up more than a lack of invitation ever would. With this, she did her best to hide the excitement she had of sharing this normal, human thing with a friend. “If you insist- but I’ll take it easy on you. I don’t want to have to drag you home.”

“Well, what I want is to walk with you. Is that too much to ask?” She takes a short jog to catch back up, her pace quickened to remain by his side. “It’s nice to finally meet you.” She extends a hand in a facade of courtesy.

Kara grins, hooking her hand behind Sabine’s neck to pull her back in. “I think you’re right,” she says, just before kissing her again.
“French toast okay with you?” Kara asks, drying her hair with a bathrobe tied around her. “Or… eggy toast? That’s such a weird name, you know that, right? I hate saying the word ‘eggy.’”
“What’s so wrong with ‘eggy’?” Sabine retorts, wiggling into her jeans as she pulls them back on. “It’s not like it’s actually from France. Eggy is a more accurate descriptor.” She huffs, retaining her grin as she pauses to look. “But yes. French toast is alright with me. I actually wasn’t planning on you cooking so it’s a happy surprise.”
