Fay rubs her thumb along the back of your hand and gives it a little squeeze.  “Hon, your mama is doing…not well.  It wouldn’t have been good for you to try and touch her while I was getting all of that sickness out of her; it would have just run into you, and then you would have been sick again, too, and I didn’t want you getting sick again.”  She doesn’t meet your eyes, but you don’t think anything of it.  (You are young.  You haven’t learned.)  “I didn’t mean to hurt you.”  Her gaze returns to yours, and whatever shadow was there before is gone now.  “Then it was getting on to dark, and you can’t stay here after dark, so I set you near your house.”

“My house is on fire—”

“The sickness was in your house, too, little one.  I had to get rid of it so that no one else would get as sick as you and your mama were.”
