Short for “contemporary approach,” the brass quintet is the most experimental piece Eric Britt, composer wrote in college. Given it was his last composition to be performed by a professional ensemble in college, he wanted to go beyond his tonal comfort zone.
Eric had attempted writing strictly atonal pieces in the past and failed because the music did not come naturally to him. For Approach, the composer decided against going straight to the opposite end of the spectrum and instead stretch his compositional mind just enough that it allowed for experimentation while staying true to what he naturally heard.
