The Millennium Monument in Novgorod. The monument was built in 1862 to commemorate the millennium of Russia. The arrival of the Viking Ryurik in Novgorod in 862 is held to be the beginning of Russian history and the House of Ryurik, or the Ryurikovichi ruled Russia until 1598. The monument was designed by Viktor Hartmann and Mikhail Mikeshin and depicts key events in Russian history in the middle tier. The lower tier, carved in relief, depicts religious, military and political figures alongside preeminent artists and writers such as Karl Bryullov, Alexander Pushkin and Mikhail Glinka.
