The newest addition to my Titanic collection... My first signature from someone who was on the actual ship!

A card signed by Millvina Dean. She was only two months old when she boarded the ship at Southampton with her family to start a new life in the United States, having been transferred onto The Titanic due to a coal strike. With her were her mother Georgette, father Bertram, and nearly two year old brother, also named Bertram.

Her father had felt the collision with the iceberg, and after he investigated went and woke his wife and children up. They got dressed and went on deck, where Georgette and the children were placed in one of the lifeboats, becoming some of the first third class passengers to escape.

Millvina’s father did not survive the sinking, and his body was one of the many that were never recovered. The family returned to England after the disaster on-board The Adriatic. Millvina was very popular with the passengers, as reported in “The Daily Mirror”:

“She was the pet of the liner during the voyage, and so keen was the rivalry between women to nurse this lovable mite of humanity that one of the officers decreed that first and second class passengers might hold her in turn for no more than ten minutes.”

Millvina would be the last remaining survivor of the Titanic, dying on May 31st, 2009, at the age of 97.

While walking around the vendor space of the Rhode Island Comic Con recently, I happened to look down and what do I see? A framed Titanic photo signed by Millvina Dean, the youngest and last Titanic survivor, with a COA and photo from when she was signing that batch of prints. Now I just need to figure out where to hang it.

Millvina Dean Youngest Person On Titanic and Lived To Be The Last Survivor

Dean's parents decided to leave the United Kingdom and emigrate to the United States; they were planning to move to Wichita, Kansas, where her father had relatives, and his cousin owned a tobacco shop that he was going to co-own. They were not supposed to be aboard the Titanic, but due to a coal strike, they were transferred onto it and boarded it as third-class passengers at Southampton, England. Dean was barely two months old when she boarded the ship. Her father felt its collision with the iceberg on the night of 14 April 1912, and after investigating, returned to his cabin, telling his wife to dress the children and go up on deck. Dean, her mother, and her brother were placed in Lifeboat 10 and were among the first third-class passengers to escape. Her father did not survive, and his body, if recovered, was never identified.

Millvina Dean, who was just barely two months old when her family boarded the Titanic in Southampton as Third Class Passengers, died on May 31, 2009 - the 97th anniversary of the launch of the Titanic. Dean also had the distinction of being the youngest passenger aboard the vessel. Prior to her death, Millvina Dean had long been one of the most public Titanic survivors - willingly telling the stories her mother had told her of the doomed vessel to anyone who asked her, appearing in documentaries about the ship, and frequently attending gatherings of enthusiasts of the ship called “Titanic Conventions.” As she grew older, her health deteriorated, and she was forced to sell off her possessions relating to Titanic to afford to stay in an assisted living home. The Millvina Fund was established to help pay her healthcare costs, with $20,000 being donated jointly by Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio; and $10,000 each donated by director James Cameron and singer Celine Dion.
