The mighty Katie Chapman announced her retirement at the end of this season, leaving her playing career behind to accept an ambassadorial role at Chelsea Ladies. She ends on a peak, having just won her tenth FA Cup medal in a final in which she looked unstoppable and ageless while also currently challenging for the league title; in 22 years, she won pretty much everything, including the quadruple with Arsenal, though she joked, ‘I've had a great career, no regrets, and I've won so many trophies--I don't even know how many, off the top of my head, and I probably should!’
I regret that I didn’t get to see enough of her in action with any of her clubs--FAWSL is sadly under-broadcast in its native England (why?), never mind here in the States, legally or otherwise--but I always loved watching her energetic, super-physical play. More than that, she was a great captain; I was really excited when she signed, having seen her with Chicago, but I remember being skeptical about her immediately being handed the armband on arriving. But she instantly was a Blue, a genuine one, and clearly loved leading and playing at this club. As she said herself when accepting the 2015 Player of the Year award, ‘Captaining this great bunch of players means more than any individual honors and recognition. I love this team, I absolutely love all of the girls. We’ve got a bunch of players who are blessed with great talent and personalities, a really good mix, and I love leading them.'
Emma Hayes, who worked with her many times at various clubs through the years, wrote a lovely tribute to her, noting that ‘Katie will always be known by those who worked with her as a tireless, fearless, consistent performer who has always been at the top of her game, regardless of the club or stage of her career. She’s an out-and-out winner.‘
