Spurs in second after the first fixtures of 2019
The first round of league fixtures in 2019 has been played, and after 11 games Tottenham Hotspur are in second, just a point behind title favourites Manchester United after fighting to beat Sheffield United 2-1 last weekend.
Charlton Athletic and Durham make up the remainder of a close top four, though both have played one more game than Spurs and Manchester United. As it stands, the top four are all within three points of each other. Durham remain the only team in the league to have gained points playing United, having drawn one and won one, and have themselves registered only one defeat so far this season.
Leicester City made a good start to their debut Championship campaign and, in fifth place, now lead the chasing pack. Having won 4-0 against Lewes last week, they have 16 points and a game in hand which may allow them to narrow the gap to fourth. Tomorrow they will hope to take advantage of a home fixture against last-placed Millwall, who have not won a league game this season and most recently lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace.
The six-pointer of the weekend sees Charlton (who drew 2-2 with the formidable Durham last week) host Manchester United, hoping to improve on their 3-0 loss in the reverse fixture early in the season.
In North London, Tottenham host Lewes and Crystal Palace visit London Bees at The Hive, where the hosts will hope to put last week’s heavy defeat in Manchester behind them. Aston Villa, who have recovered in recent weeks from a poor start to the season, travel to face Durham.
Happy New Year!
