On Dec 17, 1989, the Simpsons moved from being short commercial bumpers on The Tracy Ullman Show to its own half hour show. While it was actually the 8th episode produced, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" became the pilot episode. The Simpsons would go onto becoming the longest running animated show in prime time. The Simpsons premiered 30 years ago today (December 17, 1989) in the classic Christmas episode "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire." There's some debate to be had over whether it should be considered a standalone special meant to promote the upcoming full series or as the series premiere, seeing as how the season 1 episodes didn't begin running on a scheduled, weekly basis until January of 1990.
