...You look troubled. What's off?
I...Do you remember that childhood friend, that got me to join the Defence Force?
Been some time since you've mentioned him, but yes... What about him.
....He finally managed to join the Division. Well...MY Division.
What- he really got to pass after all these years??
....-well, not...exactly....
...okay, what... did you do?
*snorts* I wouldn't have let him pass with 0% .... Hoshina did.
Uh-huh...... // 0% wtf? that's possible??//
And I guess... I... trust his assessment.
...and that's everything there is to it...? Or....do I need to worry, like...you know..
Are you jealous, Rin?
Well, YES, duh? Ever been together with the most popular Captain of entire Japan, it's tough work, I tell ya.
*light chuckle*
No, that's not it...
*sighs* I ......just don't really know how to handle it....now.
...
Mina... Do you really think... you are the one, that's needs to handle this?
...
..... maybe you're right. Maybe this time it's his turn to act.
oh don't mind me, I'm just here sitting on my desk, thinking about women supporting each other, while also being gay. :] Song rec
I really really REALLY wanted to give Mina more attention, and more importantly, have some proper thought about her character. Most of us agreed her story comes too short in canon. And I wanted to give her more background/depth than just the sad, lonely woman at the front. Which is... unintentionally kind of what I portrait her so far...
I realized it when I put together my Mina - playlist and all the songs where Break-up shit or sad stuff..
...and I was like, nah sister, this can't be it.
Mina Ashiro - character study (? or smth like that...)
A.) I don't want to picture her as a sad loner anymore. I want to think of her to have actual bondings to other DF members, such as Okonogi, Hoshina, but also non-subordinates (well no direct ones).
B.) and I want her to be a lesbian, dating Rin-OK, THIS PART IS OPTIONAL FOR Y'ALL, BUT I SHIP THEM, SO SHUT UP. I DON'T CARE THEY NEVER SPOKE A WORD.
C.) I'd like to imagine Mina talked about her feelings about Kafka finally joining the DF. Preferrably not Hoshina, Okonogi, or anyone at the 3rd, 'cause I imagine her to be very considerate about her direct working environment. Some other member of the DF is kind of a stretch as well - WHICH IS WHY - it needs to be someone she'd be very close to (platonic or romantically)
D.) closing my analysis with the question how Mina actually thinks about Kafka. *adjusts non-existant glasses*
We know Mina has a strong drive to fight for others, and prevent casualities and her soldiers/people dying. I'd say it's actually a negative motivation - something to prevent bad happenings. We don't see her strive to become "the best"(TM) of them all, anymore. That part of Mini-Mina vanished completely with Kafka giving up on joining the DF. She is nearly the only(!) character that is missing this drive btw. in the series. Well...if you focus on those with proper screentime and dialogue.
Sorry, this is a bit stereotypical, but to me that's a very...female approach to handle things. She's not strong for herself, but for everybody else. And I can imagine her struggling with that, the moment our weak, 0% Kafka joins the Defence Force.
AND - I'd like to imagine somebody ELSE is helping her ground her feelings about that. Like "Hey, you had to let go and all, but maybe this ain't about "getting back". Maybe you need to give him space to grow on his own now." And this is what Kafka canonly does - he thrives and develops on his own, of course there's help, but it's never Mina herself training him, since she felt (rightfully) too personally involved in this.
She might be still angry or irritated, yes, but I won't believe that's her only reason to not approach Kafka directly (well until things go bonkers and kaiju and yadayada...)
This is btw why I, personally, do not feel the KafMina ship, since there is *gestures wildly with arms* well, a whole bunch of growth and time missing for that relationship to develope a possible romantic mutual closeness. But - again, personal preference here, not hating the ship either.
