He intended to write. He wanted to tell her that he just wanted to come by and say hello, to keep his good habits. He needed to come up with an excuse compelling enough to leave no room for suspicion or loose ends. It had to be something so casual and spontaneous that he himself could forget that he did it intentionally. But there were too many complications, as if he wanted to deceive himself, as if he wanted to dodge the real motivatons for which he ventured to make that titanic attempt. He did not want to mention their past history, he did not want to make an allusion to himself, to avoid sentimentality.He didn't want to talk about time either, in  order to save some awkward evocation or reproaches. He didn't even want to talk about something in special, just wanted to say hello. But within himself he thought that letters without a concrete object should not be written; so it was impossible for him to write anything.

Tenía la intención de escribirle. Quería decirle que solo deseaba pasar a saludar, para no perder las buenas costumbres. Necesitaba inventar una excusa lo suficientemente convincente como para no dejar espacio para sospechas o cabos sueltos. Debía ser algo tan casual y espontaneo que él mismo pudiera olvidar que lo hacía intencionalmente. Pero eran demasiadas complicaciones, como si quisiese engañarse a si mismo, como si quisiese esquivar los verdaderos motivos que le impulsaban a aventurarse a aquel intento titánico. No quería mencionar su historia pasada, no quería hacer alusión a ella o a sí mismo, para evitar sentimentalismos. No quería hablar del tiempo, por ahorrarse alguna evocación incómoda o reproches. No quería hablar de nada en especial, solo saludar. Pero dentro de sí pensó que las cartas sin un objeto concreto no deberían ser escritas; así que le fue imposible escribir cualquier cosa.
