I sighed in relief as I was being booked into the police station, the throbbing of my head took over the thoughts of what I was planning to do next. “Do you know who did this to you?” He asked. I remained quiet and felt the little bump that held my unborn daughter. “I-I.” I stuttered out. “Ma’am, you can tell me. This is a safe place.” The officer said in a calm manner. “M-My. Ex. boyfriend...” I whimpered out. He sighed and noticed how I kept hiding my stomach. “Are you expecting?” He asked. “I-Yes.” I mumbled out. I was still hiding behind my long velvet red hair, hiding my green eyes, that were above all my bruises. “How far along are you miss?” The other officer asked me. “Four months.” I said quietly. “Well congratulations miss. I know you are in a bad spot right now but we need to take your photos to make sure whoever did this to you will get justice served to him.” She said calmly, I sighed and finally raised my head to reveal what this sick man has done to me this time around.
See, this is only the maybe 10th time I’ve been abused this bad by the one who claims to love me. When I was growing up, love was not brutal...it was sweet and kind. Not letting blood spill from the small crevices of my so called blessed fair skin. He made me his canvas, his canvas of misfortunes and his anger mixed with faults. The man who did this to me is my ex boyfriend, his name is Raul. Raul Perez. 6 feet tall, 179 pounds of mixed anger. Four months ago I was told I was officially carrying his daughter. To this day I’m still trying to figure out if this is a blessing or a curse. Carrying my abuser’s child. What does it sound like to you?
The Officer that was booking me in was named Andrew Mcnally, light brown eyes, skin like ivory mixed with hints of pink and hair like the midnight sky. Quite frankly, he was beautiful in my view. From the look of his partner in justice, she wasn’t so happy to be looking at him. “You’re trembling. Are you alright?” Officer Mcnally asked in a still calm tone. He had eyes that gave me the ability to trust him. I did. “Just tired and scared, thats all Mcnally. Just get her booked in for the investigator to start getting the truth out of her.” The other Officer said in a cold tone. Her name was Sargent April. As she walked away I noticed Officer Mcnally stand up and watched his movement as he took off his jacket. He then rested it around my shoulders to keep me warm in the cold room. “So you won’t get a cold. You’re probably very weak from walking and being beaten. We’ll get you to a safe place. Do you have family? Around here?” He asked, now looking worried from my long silence. I nodded my head yes and exhaled as I felt the heartache I left my mother in a year ago when I stupidly ran off with Raul. “My mother.” I murmmered. “Where does she live?” Mcnally asked. “Up the road. The ranch that supplies this small town with milk.” I said with a little more life in my voice. “Hmm okay. You know what? I’m just going to drive you to your mother’s. It won’t be until morning until the investigator will come and I know you don’t want to sleep in a jail cell. C’mon.” Officer Mcnally said as he helped me up slowly. As we walked out to his patrol vehicle, I watched the stars line up in different lines as the night weighed through this mid fall weather.
“Such a peaceful night.” Officer Mcnally said as we drove through the tall wooded road. “I missed these trees. Sometimes being in the station and patroling in the city can really make you miss the forest.” He said with a smile. I know he was just trying to comfort me with small talk, but at the moment I was too far into my thoughts on what if Raul was to find me. “Alright. well here we are. Dairy ranch. Lot’s of land here, beautiful if you ask me.” Mcnally said with a sigh to my remaining silence. “Well lets get you inside.” He said before getting out of the car. I slowly got out but saw Mcnally rush to help me out. “Here I gotcha.” He said with devotation. It calmed me more and gave him that small smile that proved that I was opening up with him.
We walked up the small set of steps before making it to the door. Mcnally knocked on the door after looking around at the surroundings he seemed to like. After a long pause of silence, we heard the door creak open to my mother looking as if she was getting bad news. “Yes officer?” She asked. “Ma’am I have some information on your daughter Lilliana.” He said firmly but calmly. “She’s dead isn’t she? He killed her. Raul killed her.” She whispered. “No! I mean. -Clears throat- No ma’am. We found her, ALIVE and bruised up. I thought of just bringing her home to a place that can keep her out of stress. Especially in her, uh. Delicate state.” Mcnally said in a somewhat fearful tone. “Let me see her.” My mother said sternly. Mcnally nodded and took a step to the left. At that moment, I finally lifted my head fully and took a good look at what was right in front of me. “Lilliana?” My mother asked with tears in her eyes. “Hi mama.” I whispered. “Are you okay?” She asked me before wrapping her arms around me, making me whimper out of the pain I was suffering. “Oh my god. What did he do to you?” She asked. “Uh Mrs..?-”
“Okay, Mrs. Encina. I would rather have her answer those questions to the investigator and I in the morning. But for now, I recommend a warm sense of hospitality and comfort. And mainly. Rest.” Mcnally stated. “Yes of course. God bless you officer for bringing her home. We will see you in the morning. Goodnight.” My mother said before helping me into the house. “Goodnight ladies.” Mcnally said before walking back to his car.
