Mafia au fun fact: Martyn is a detective that went to school with Pearl, Grian and Jimmy. He mainly hung out with Jimmy, and it surprised both everyone and no one to find out that Martyn knew that Jimmy was in Empires from the beginning. He runs a detective agency called ‘The Listeners’. Jimmy is employed there.

Grian’s Backstory - Mafia AU

Grian and Pearl Craft are twins, born to a relatively well off couple. They live in the Evo district of the city, which is one of the poorer districts, but she’s a detective, he’s a reporter, it was love at first crime scene. So their parents keep meeting at crime scenes, and they exchange numbers, get married et-cetera.

And when Grian and Pearl are three, their father starts researching into the hermitcraft gang. He didn’t know what he was getting into when he started to research them - he thought it was a small gang, not the mafia that was in a gang war with the Minecraft gang and winning.

So, with the help of his lovely wife, he gets in over his head, and they are both murdered in the middle of the night, as is their wont. GenerikB, the assassin who did that, took the pair to the local orphanage (Evo District Orphanage) and set up funding for them. I will go into this in a different post cause this is a long one already (or i wont you have to get me to do it)

On the morning of the next day, one of the nurses at the orphanage finds a roughly one year old boy on the doorstep. They don’t know anything about him, but the tag on his clothes say ‘Jimmy’, so that’s what he’s called!

Jimmy, Grian and Pearl are pretty much attached at the hip as kids, going so far as to sneak three year old Jimmy into class with them when they started school (they were caught immediately but it was very cute). The orphanage kind of assumed that Jimmy was Grian and Pearl’s biological sibling, who was found after the murders happened, so they gave him the last name ‘Craft’ with them.

When high school rolls around, TFC (poorly disguised as a kindly old sponsor) comes to the orphanage to ask Pearl and Grian where they want to go. The pair say that ‘it’d be nice to go to Watcher Academy, but we can’t leave Jimmy behind, he’s our brother’. TFC agrees that he’ll be allowed to attend when he’s old enough for high school, and promises to cover his schooling until the twins graduate. They agree to this.

Grian, having gotten into the high school, decides that the best thing to do with rich people money is to wreck the place. He gets suspended twice, nearly arrested, and into a lot of fights in his first year. He calms down during his second year, when he meets Taurtis, and half way through his third year he and Taurtis are allowed to go on exchange to Japan. They’re supposed to be there for six months.

They’re there for 2 years.

After they arrive back, Taurtis moves away. His parents shift him to a new city, and Grian says goodbye before starting his final year of high school. Grian does fairly well during his exams and picks up a job during the holidays. 

Once he graduates, he and Pearl are given a grace period of three months to find an apartment (and also legally adopt Jimmy) before they’re kicked out of the orphanage. In that time, there comes a problem. They can’t afford to send Jimmy through any school in the area, and though Jimmy says he’s fine with it, and he’s happy to get a job to help out, they do feel kinda guilty.

So Grian steal a briefcase from a man in a suit and gets disappeared.

The man he stole from was Mumbo, the briefcase contained some low class - but still important - documents in it, and Grian was caught before he could even get home. He manages to plead his case, and joins the hermits as a low class runner to put Jimmy through school and Pearl through university.

Grian does really well, and gets along with the core hermits very nicely. He misses Jimmy’s graduation to be inducted into the core hermits. He spends a few months with them, playing pranks and attending meetings, bringing a needed point of view from the poorer districts. Then he meets with Pearl.

She takes the news pretty well, having worked out that he was with the hermits when the news started reporting on some Hermitcraft crime scenes having chicken feathers left behind. She tells him about how uni was going, and how Jimmy went off to a university outside of the city with Martyn so the pair of them could become detectives.

Grian and Pearl keep communicating, he meets up with Jimmy (though he doesn’t tell him he’s with Hermitcraft) when he and Martyn found The Listeners. He does his job with the hermits, plays pranks on mumbo and iskall and scar, and has a good time.

Empires is founded, and when Pearl lets him know that she was invited to join them, he recruits her to the hermits. She’s in the core hermits, though she isn’t initiated to keep her identity safe from the Empires SMP while she spies on them.

By the time that the Dream SMP rolls into the city (when the au starts), Grian and Pearl both believe that Jimmy doesn’t know about them being in Hermitcraft.

Mafia Au fun fact:

Tommy, Tubbo, Ranboo and Purpled’s favourite cafe is a front owned by hermitcraft. Pearl has sat in the cafe, writing a report to Xisuma himself about her latest spying mission, and watched the four of them very loudly discuss their jobs. Her reports on the dream smp practically write themselves there, though she isn’t even supposed to be spying on them

Hello! I’ve just had the best thought and I don’t know if anyone has brought this up before, but just I case and can’t let this slip through your fingers: Pixelriffs is both on Empires and does The Hermitcraft Recap. Literally the best perfect spy material. Like he works at one of Hermitcraft’s face companies and does the weekly report for them as his job, and then he walks back to Empire territory and promptly does a status update. -Chandelier

Pixlriffs, jumping from working at the front for one mafia to doing a status report for another:

In actuality, he started off as an internet reporter on local crime with Zloy! When the pair of them got into a spot of bother with both the local law enforcement and the hermits, they managed to con their way out by promising to go and get a journalist degree before continuing to do this sorta thing.

Once they did, they got hired by the hermits, mainly to keep them out of trouble.

Pixl met Fwhip in university, and when Fwhip had finished uni he invited Pixl to join his blackmailing ring, but mainly because Pixl lives in what was about to become Empires territory. He's less a spy and more a guy who's twitter account nearly got him killed, and now he's walking a dangerous line so that neither gang knows he works for the other.
