(( College AU where they still have psychic powers because I can do what I want))
Hatori sat on the rather thin mattress of his dorm bed, surrounded by papers and open textbooks. At some point while studying for a computer science midterm, he’d turned on his Switch for “just a quick game” of Tetris 99 that had turned into almost an hour long study break. Outside the grey early winter sky made Hatori sleepy, not in the mood to do any schoolwork anyway. After several late nights working, and procrastinating, the weight of impending exams just made him want to put off studying even more.
“We’re supposed to be working.”
Hatori looked up from his game at Minegishi, who’d had taken over his desk with their own schoolwork: textbooks, lab reports and other biology-related things. They didn’t seem to be studying either, judging from the way they leaned back in their chair, typing something on their phone.
“I’m taking a break,” Hatori said, turning most of his focus back to the game.
“You’ve been ‘taking a break’ for an hour,” Minegishi pointed out.
“And what have you been doing?”
“Studying. I’m taking my break now,” they said. They stood up and crossed the short distance between the bed and the desk, clearing Hatori’s laptop and some stray pens out of their way before flopping down right next to him.
Instantly, Hatori felt butterflies in his stomach. He and Minegishi had only been on one date, they had only been ‘official’ for a few weeks. Well, that was up for debate. They’d met within the first few weeks of college through mutual friends, and Hatori had been smitten almost instantly. So when Minegishi asked him on a date a few weeks ago he could barely answer, he was so tongue-tied. That hadn’t changed too much.
Minegishi leaned on him, wrapping their arms around his shoulders.
“What are you playing?”
“Tetris.”
“Tetris?”
“Competitive Tetris.”
“Hm,” Minegishi rested their head on his shoulder, pulling him a little closer. Hatori’s head spun. They smelled good, like grass after it rains, and they seemed so content snuggling up against him with practically all their weight. Were they always this affectionate?
“Are you using your technopathy?” Minegishi asked, mumbling a little against Hatori’s shoulder.
“Nah,” Hatori said.
“Have you ever used it on games?”
Hatori nodded, “Oh yeah, for sure.”
Minegishi huffed out a breath through their nose in an amused almost-laugh. That was about as close as they usually came to laughing, and Hatori found it cute.
“Do you want to play?” he asked.
“Sure.”
Hatori handed them the Switch and explained how the game worked. Minegishi was okay at it, but Hatori was distracted by the fact that they were leaning on each other, faces too close as they huddled around the tiny screen.
“You’re doing really well,” Hatori said. They weren’t close to the top, but they weren’t losing. And considering how fierce the competition could be, Hatori might’ve been a little impressed.
“Give me a boost.”
“No!” Hatori nudged them playfully, “You win or lose without psychic powers.”
Minegishi laughed. Not the usual dry, sardonic laugh either, but something genuine and legitimately filled with joy.
Hatori found himself staring, awestruck, feeling his own face grow hot. So close, he could lean in just a hair more and their noses would brush.
They’d only really kissed once before, well actually, Minegishi had kissed him on the cheek after their first (only) date and maybe that didn’t totally count. And that was about all the kissing Hatori had ever done; needless to say he had very little experience.
Hatori wanted to kiss them, and maybe it was wishful thinking but it seemed like Minegishi did too. Hopefully.
Spurred on by a boost of confidence, he leaned forward, nervously closing the distance. Hatori had never done this before, what does he do with his hands? Hold their hands? But they were still holding the Switch. Hug them? The angle was weird.
He opted to stiffly placing both hands on Minegishi’s shoulders. Their lips brushed, Hatori landed the kiss on the corner of their mouth, his thick glasses bumped into their nose.
“Sorry…” He leaned back, face even redder than before, heart thudding in his chest. He messed up their kiss! He must look like a complete dweeb. Minegishi frowned at him.
“Don’t be sorry,” their voice had an edge to it, as if they’re insulted by the mere act of Hatori apologizing. Reassuring, in a way that is very much Minegishi.
“I…”
Before Hatori could stumble over a response, and he wasn’t sure what that would even be, Minegishi put the Switch down on the bed and reached forward, carefully removing Hatori’s glasses, fingers brushing the side of his face. Hatori blinked, a little disoriented.
Then he felt arms around his shoulders pull him closer, and Minegishi’s lips press against his. They were clumsy, both of them, but Hatori didn’t care. He smiled into the kiss, not sure what to do before breaking away with a gasp. Minegishi’s eyes stayed on his, expression softened.
“I’m nervous too, it’s fine,” they said bluntly.
“Really?”
“Yeah, I don’t know what I’m doing,” they said.
“Neither do I.” Hatori breathes a sigh of relief, “I’m so glad it’s not just me.”
“Of course it’s not.” Minegishi said, “but we should practice, then maybe we’ll get it.”
“What about studying?” Hatori said coyly. Minegishi rolled their eyes.
“Don’t make me change my mind,” they teased, voice flat but with a playfulness Hatori knew to look for.
He kissed them again, laughing against their lips.
