Missing Buses and Trips to Europe

Living in the middle of nowhere in Southern Ireland means having to be dropped to buses to get anywhere: no where is within walking distance. 

So, because a group of people in my class in school (including me) made it through to the finals of The Get Up And Go Mini Company Competition, our school organised a bus up to Naas (near Dublin and approximately a three and a half/four hour bus journey from where I live) where the competition was being held. Since we were to be in Naas before 9 o’clock and have our stall set up, the bus had to leave early. As in, HALF FOUR IN THE MORNING. Now, I don’t mind the occasional early start, especially when it’s for the finals of a competition. However, the night before, our school was holding a transition year fashion show.

Me and my friend Katie decided since we were both getting the bus, I might as well stay in her house the night of the fashion show. Because I’m a helpful set-dismantling-person, and because both Katie and I talk a lot, we got home at around half past midnight.

After a few cups of tea and some biscuits, and a lot more chatting, we decided it probably wasn’t worth our time going to sleep. We could just sleep on the bus on the way to Naas. We threw on a DVD and braced ourselves for a sleepless night.

I was awoken by the shrill ringing of my phone, which was pressed between my cheek and the pillow. Bleary-eyed, I answered, to hear the not-so-cheerful voice of a team member asking me where the f*** we were. In my early-morning, lack-of-sleep confusion, I asked him what he meant. 

Turns out it was five o’clock in the morning. Half an hour after we were supposed to be on the bus.

Fun times.

After an Italian Job style car chase (okay, so there were no minis), we managed to catch the bus and fall into it, bedheaded and with smudges of the night before’s make up.

Of course, we managed to scrub up a bit a few hours later in the hotel bathroom (hmm, reminds me… funny story concerning hotel bathrooms - I’ll leave Ryan tell that one), and win the overall prize for our Mini Company.

A prize which involves a free trip in September to a yet undisclosed location in Europe (possibly Italy). It was Paris last year, Barcelona the year before, and Brussels before that. Of course, the one downside is Ryan won’t be coming… he’s still well jealous over that :)

After nearly ruining the day, you’d think I’d learn my lesson about being on time for buses… well, the next day my class visited UCC, our nearest university, and I ended up running to the bus at the end of the trip. I think I’m possibly just jinxed.

So the lesson is, wear a watch, people, and set your alarm clock. Any awkward late moments? Let us know!
