WiP - Sewing for Katherina - Pt 4
As mentioned in the part before I took a long break (and a nap) before I continued with the dress itself.
First was .... I opened up the sleeves as I noticed it would be smarter to do that and add that one layer of ruffles with machine rather than hand stitching those AND the bigger ones by hand. Also I corrected the misfit of the decorations a bit.
Of course there is still the lining and sewing them into the dress but that's something for later.
It's a bit unfair this looks like quick progress which ... it wasn't. I opened up several seams several times to have even seams, seams matching and all that. I still need to correct a few things by hand later on when I am done adding the lining. (But doesn't she look happy in the last one with test pinning the details I need to change?)
Sewing the lining itself was a walk in the park if you compare it as .. I didn't really care if it looked pretty or not as it's not really visible and seams don't need to match 100%.
Then I wanted to be smart but as you can see... this didn't work. I needed to open up several seams again to fix this silly mess.
But eventually I finally got the lining in without sewing in any of the decorative ruffles.
I pinned down the lining at the top to sew it by hand later on. Same as the sleeves and their lining plus their closure later on.
Aka what is left is sewing by hand for the dress.
AND of course the bonnet and giving her a manicure, but this will be a task for another day.
It was indeed incredible slow progress after that as work still eats me, first I closed the lining.
Then I completed the sleeves and totally forgot about the fact I needed to sew in the big ruffles - which weren't even ruffles but only lines of fabric before i made them by hand.
Then I closed the lining for the sleeves and sewed the sleeves in.
That was another day of sewing, the end is in sight I hope my material for the bonnet arrives soon.
WiP Katherina - Enhancing eyebrows
or: why sometimes revisiting projects helps.
I really loved how Katherina's face up turned out but the eyebrows were bothering me, they were better than the black ones I did before but not as detailed. After painting Lucia it somehow clicked and I figured out how I like my eyebrows.
I tested with Lenalee and then thought "screw it" for Katherina as I had two options: scrubbing her clean and repainting her from a blank state or trying to enchance the eyebrows and nail it (or scrub her clean after ruining them).
At first I added more base to the eyebrows as one was shorter than the other and I wasn't fully happy with the shape.
Then I painted a few hairs with watered down black and then with a less watered down black.
I never was so incredible amazed by my own skills to draw thin lines I absolutely love her.
The improvement is insane she looks so much more natural now.
She's all prepped for her body arriving now and I am kinda hyped to work on her, now that I don't have to replicate the work I did on the face up sewing for her is the main part. I have so much to figure out but that's fine, I'm content with that.
WiP - Sewing for Katherina - Pt 5
Hopefully the last part here.
I decided to add pearls to the front as I felt something was missing (hint: the pearls look even but they do a curve when the dress is put on ... which i ofc noticed later).
Then i tried to close the whole thing with hooks but after 20 minutes of try & error (more error than anything) I gave up and went for snap buttons instead.
I finally was able to put her into the dress saw the curved pearls and due the fact I was really done mentally for the day I decided to add some more pearls, I am yet not sure if I will open it up and correct everything or keep it like this.
For now the whole outfit looks like this and as I am super done I just find it not to my liking, I decided to put it aside for the day hoping I would be able to deal with it the next one.
Manicure and Bonnet are still to be done, for the Bonnet I am waiting for another material anyways.
So that's the progress for this day.
.... you knew this was about to happen, right? I checked historical references and saw a lot of styles of that dress work with coats instead for millions of layers and the curve here bothered me way too much.
Looking up references helped me to find a better solution with the front panel and I am very pleased with the result this time around!
It looks less stiff and the pearls kinda look like buttons :3
As the dress was FINALLY done after 5 days of pouring my time into it I was able to start on the bonnet. First I crafted a rough mock up and then looked up some refs & made my own pattern, testing while I cut the parts. I have to say I am once again amazed I only had to cut the pattern 1 time they fit perfectly together.
The progress here was first me adding a layer of Vliseline to make the bonnet more stiff and then adding way too many ruffles and frills here but that's what we needed.
Here is the roughly pinned down bonnet, I will again call it a day here. Hand sewing the front and some details left. AND a manicure. Hope to have her finished soon.
Seriously finishing the sewing parts of her were kinda relieving, I was going on her dress for a week now in almost all free time I had.
Last but no least I finally painted her hands.
So here she is, I sadly run out of space for photos, but I took some teaser-y photos with Adam's hat with her. I will wait till the next weekend to do some proper photos that aren't taken at the window.
Finished by 20/03/25
WiP - Sewing for Katherina - Pt 2
or: details and solutions.
This part was done on the same day as the full underwear. I had decided to work on the pattern next but checked my refs more and figured out it's not a cape she wears but her dress has enormous sleeves and the ruffles at the bottom of the dress were wider than die seams Hoshino had drawn on her dress and yeah... i decided to make a dress to go under her dress, basically a full 'underdress'
I quickly made a pattern out of nowhere (aka I just used the undershirt as base, made adjustments and then estimated the sleeves and the skirt parts, adjusting while working).
First I put together the skirt part of the dress and added big ruffles to it. It went fine but then ...
... I luckily noticed this seam was going to eat a part of the fabric, i only needed to open it up by a bit to fix it. Always triple check your fabrics x_x
Here we have a roughly draped skirt part just to check if it's enough.
Then I went on the sleeves and the top part. I figured out I still need to make adjustments for the top dress later on (the hips are just so darn wide and all the layers add a lot of bulk here). The ruffle lace is something I bought for Katherina as it matches the little flowers on the main fabric and I ... wasn't in the mood to make a ton of tiny ruffles.
Then attaching the pieces together and adding snap buttons for closure. At this point I felt I was going for quite long again and was glad I already had done what I wanted to (the underwear), so this was a bonus for the day :)
Here is the underdress on her. I do consider tea-dying the top part to have a more dulled yellow instead of that stark white, I will sit on this decision a bit.
... after 3 hours I decided I want to tea dye the top part. It went a bit into the skirt fabric we have a hue here, it will be less prominent when dry but I think the dulled tone suits it much better.
WiP - Sewing for Katherina - Pt 3
As I managed to get so much done on one day I was not sure if I wanted to continue but I wanted to make the pattern for the main dress at least.
What can I say...? I cut parts and decided to start, most of the times it's the start that is the hardest. But as the main dress has so many details I gave them the priority, starting with the base for the sleeve ruffles.
Then I made the dress and sleeve decorations, those alone ate more than 1 hour. I hoped to cheat a bit here with lace but I only had a very meager rest from Qifrey and decided to go back to my original idea and stay closer to the reference.
But I am glad I bought that ruffle lace, when I imagine that I would have needed to make tons of tiny ruffles.... nope.
After I completed the details I worked on the sleeves, there are a lot of ruffles to add and decorations. They are lined as I noticed there are ruffles INSIDE of the sleeves (Hoshino why).
I put them aside for the time being as I needed to finish them by hand.
Sleeves done so far... I wanted something that made me feel like I had progress, so I went with the 'skirt' of the dress.
The bodice was next, I had now to test if my revised pattern was fitting for her with all the layers or not. Luckily it was. The lace is a bit uneven I will later fix that by hand a bit.
Then I put together the lining and tested that as well.
But I felt it was time for a big long break, so this is what will await me.
