A lot of the stuff that makes me want to run out and just spend crazy money (Lego Mindstorms, Raspberry Pi) is many years advanced for my preschoolers. So, how to I rig their interests so that I can buy that fun stuff later? Introducing robots, programming, and tinkering for toddlers.
Run A Maze Program Create a maze out of paper, index cards, or chalk. Get your kids to come up with a “sequence” for the animal to run to get to the end. Programming for preschoolers!
Build An ArtBot Create toys from junk, either motorized or not. This little ArtBot is made from wine cork, electrical tape, popsicle sticks, and a plastic cup. But we’ve made even simpler things, like this ball bouncer using a plastic bottle, rubber bands, and a string.
See How Toys Work Grab a screw driver and start taking some old toys apart to see how they work. Tinker, improve, and dismantle.
A day of making and dismantling. Tinker Friday. Learning how stuff works. Loads of fun!! Many of my least favorite toys were sacrificed in the name of science, which makes me happy :)
