PAPERPLAY
It certainly didn’t take long to determine a design we all wanted to create. Inspired by and challenged with creating block letters out of paper we collectively recalled The Hoosiers song “Goodbye Mr. A”, along with it’s superhero themed music video, which I believe is evident in our final outcome.
Through the preceding presentation and then our own work, it was interesting to learn and attempt different ways to manipulate as simple a material as paper to create visually interesting and enticing effects.

CALL MY NAME
The sheer vastness of typographical terminology was surprising. There is quite literally a name for EVERYTHING!
Reinforcing my basic understanding of using Adobe Illustrator was certainly a strength of mine in this task, enabling me to produce a rather accurate recreation of the letter “E” block as photographed above. However the typeface itself still eludes me...

Lorem ipsum: placeholder text commonly used in the graphic, print, and publishing industries for previewing layouts and visual mockups. - It’s purpose is to create a natural looking block of text (sentence, paragraph, page, etc.) that doesn't distract from the layout, enabling designers, and such, to accurately test out their work before content is added.

The first image is a good example of how alignment can be used to anchor text and image together. It also leaves plenty of negative space to draw even more attention to the alignment and there is a strong contrast between the background and foreground image.

The second image demonstrates how the line principle can be applied to complex shapes both directly and through the use of negative space.

And Still I Rise
You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ’Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, Weakened by my soulful cries? Does my haughtiness offend you? Don't you take it awful hard ’Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I've got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise. Born in 1928, Maya Angelou lived through some of the worst oppression and inequality for African American people. Although slavery had been long abolished, Angelou saw its effects on society and the African American people. This poem is her declaration that she, for one, would not allow the hatefulness of society to determine her own success. The poem, Still I Rise, is not only a proclamation of her own determination to rise above society, but was also a call to others to live above the society in which they were brought up. There's a defiance in the poem as you read through, as if the speaker is trying to prick the conscience of the oppressor, by reminding them of past wrongs and present realities. This stirring poem is packed full of figurative language and when read through comes over as a sort of secular hymn to the oppressed and abused. The message is loud and clear - no matter the cruelty, regardless of method and circumstance, the victim will rise up, the slave will overcome adversity.
