All About Me

I’m a pink-loving, volleyball-playing, startup-making kind of girl. In other words, I’m Megan! Some other words that represent me 100% are organizer, planner, doer, leader, creative, determined, focused and happy! I also value my personal attributes of being a very kind and caring person. I love meeting new people, making new friends and family is most important to me. Aside from these personal characteristics, I’m a goal-driven person and I always strive to do my best. One of my major goals is to one day be the CEO of my company. I want my company to make a difference in the community I live in by improving work-life balance for others. This may seem like a big goal, but being an entrepreneur runs in my blood. I have a strong business and math background, but while at University I hope to improve my artistic abilities. Whenever I have time off from work or school, you can find me outdoors exploring nature and probably taking a million pictures of flowers. One of my dream projects is to travel around the world to take pictures of the different architecture and foliage there. Some of the places I would like to visit are Barcelona, Paris, Italy and London. When I buy my first house, I would like to stay in Ontario and live in the countryside to have lots of backyard space and be close to nature. Now for some quick favourites: shopping, my puppy, anything that involves glitter, Disney movies, interior decorating and finally, all types of music! So whenever you come across my name, you will now know what I’m all about!

I am a dependable student who focuses on their passion for design and the digital arts. Using my previous experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Lightroom I aim to create works that reflect my clientele and their needs. Being an avid reader of many genres lets me expand my knowledge and inspires me to make different pieces that expand the contents of my portfolio. I am very punctual when it comes to deadlines, and if I'm working with a group I can be very adaptable to any changes. 

My own personal aesthetic leans towards a more minimalist, abstract, and comedic point of view – inspired by artists such as Wolfgang Weingart, Maurizio Cattelan, and Yayoi Kusama. I like to have an optimistic outlook on life, while still holding a bit of realism in mind. The saying "Whatever happens, happens for a reason" influences a lot of my life, as I am a person who likes to go with the flow and takes whatever comes my way with an open mind.I am also a big traditional art fan, going to places such as the MOMA and Guggenheim in New York, the Uffizi and Galleria dell'Accademia in Italy, the AGO and ROM in Toronto. In conclusion, I like to think of myself as someone with a passion for many different arts, and is adaptable to any change that comes my way.

Branding Statement

In the process of writing this I had found my greatest impasse to be just thinking about myself. For full disclosure, I know that this will be a running theme in this statement. What crystallizes fully from much forethought is an arbitrary sort of persistence. A persistence to work, earn and be truthfully. My attitudes consist of the aforementioned themes. I believe in good work which comes of effort, and I believe in earning what is yearned for. From this I have found my core strength to be working, not so much thinking of the end goal rather the process. I lose myself in my work, in fact I’m sure I’ll have written past my limit absentmindedly. Aside from that, I value truth among other things like family, friends and independence. Those for me stem from something genuine, hence their appeal to me. My interests include music and writing. The reason I chose this program to begin with was the chance to create. The inception of anything crafted seems to make me giddy, having it be mine is something beyond that. In sum I’ve described a brand reluctant to call itself such, but a brand nonetheless that stands on something real, me.

Who Is Adam?

I’ve been through a lot of phases of deciding what I want to do as a career. I even applied to a broad range of university/college programs (including cooking!) It was after I discovered GBDA that I decided that I want to work at a large company leading large projects covering many fields of marketing/design. Im also interested in fashion and would like to start producing clothes I’ve designed in the next year or so. I don’t really have a set destination for where my future will take me yet.  Montreal maybe, San Fran maybe, depends where fashion, design, marketing (my career in general) could take me - maybe even my music. I’ve always been enamoured by Utrecht and would love to live there in the future - possibly do my GBDA 3A term there. On my last day on earth, I would say goodbye to everyone I love, play a song on each one of my instruments, give my dog a solid pat on the head, and crack open a cold one with the boys.

My best day ever was when I played at Ottawa’s major music festival, Bluesfest. Really killer experience.

I used to dislike my name but then one day my friend started calling me Adamo and it’s really stuck. It’s a name from back home but people call me it here at Waterloo.

My dream prokect would be designing, creating, and marketing my own shoes. Fabric items are generally less complex than getting shoes produced - it’s a really difficult but interesting field to get involved in. Vice’s Nuts and Bolts series has an episode that sparked my interest in it.

I strongly believe my obituary will read, “Wow, I can’t believe he died thrashing.”

In one word, I am persistent.

I believe I’m generally a pretty happy person! Of course I get sad, but I try to promote a positive attitude! I want to have the personality traits of Tyler, The Creators wardrobe.

My biggest phobia is skiing, but I have a fear of making poor decisions, or working hard to get to a place in my life but not working hard once I get there.

I’d say my biggest talent is that I’m very good at picking up new skills to add to my repertoire. I’m a jack of many trades and I hope I can crack down, focus, and master a few.

Mini Blog #2: Personal Branding

Hi! My name is Michelle and I’m originally from Seoul, South Korea, but grew up in Seattle. I returned to Korea to finish high school in favor to my mom learning English just to communicate with me. The immediate culture shock that I had encountered during high school opened my eyes to understand how important a language is to culture and identity. Cultures are like genes- a diverse gene pool leads to a healthier population! The great thing about every additional language that you learn, is that it opens up a culture in a way that really isn't possible otherwise. 

Working in the retail industry required excellent interpersonal and time management skills. I practiced presenting myself and the product in an appealing and engaging manner to help raise sales and improve customer communications. Blending into the fast-paced environment, I often had to make quick yet effective decisions. From this experience, I became more goal oriented, flexible, and creative under pressure. With my tactical skills mixed with strategic skills, I paved my path into entrepreneurship and web design as I have learned how to come up with innovative ways to persuade customers with my product knowledge and service skills.

I started a side project using Twitter to see the amount of influence and profitability I could gain by creating product reviews for 100 days. During 100 days, my contents reached over 25M views. I approached several companies for sponsorships and sold personalized stationery products to more than 25,000 direct customers. Also, through working in retail, I enhanced my ability to communicate persuasively and to prioritize ruthlessly. My compelling and actionable market-driven ideas contributed to my success in managing sponsorships, budgets, and data. I’m confident with my great social engagement and differentiating myself from other competitors.
