I was super proud of my little sister and her awesome Cosplay choices for HVFF this weekend. On Saturday she went as her favorite character, Felicity Smoak from Arrow. On Sunday she went as her close second, Speedy (Thea Queen.) There were so many options she could have chosen from and we left the decision completely up to her. She went the “girl power” route and said she chose the two girls she thought could take care of themselves. A few people (the small minority) asked about her being too young to watch the show and cosplay these characters. Her response was simple. “Why can little boys cosplay as The Arrow, Flash, and many other DC and Marvel characters but a girl can’t?” I completely agree. Arrow, Flash and Legends are our “weekly” family shows. We watch all 3 together every Friday. Sure, there are the occasional scenes that we don’t want her to see. If a scene comes up that we don’t think is appropriate, we tell her to close her eyes or leave the room. It’s rare, but one example being a certain scene in 3.20. She just didn’t watch. That simple. ;) I personally think the overwhelming positivity that characters like Felicity Smoak bring to her is worth it. Characters like that are hard to come by for young girls, so I for one am so happy she’s found a character she can relate to who is what we consider an acceptable role model. I also love that she’s picking up the right message on the show. She absolutely loves Oliver and Felicity as a couple, and the kid was legit devastated when they broke up. But the fact that she knew it was right decision for Felicity to leave further proves my point. So I leave you with my favorite quote of the weekend from her. “I really wanted to just hug Stephen Amell when he asked me why I left, but I didn’t. I had to walk away for Girl Power”
