Theseus and Ariadni (The myth of the Minotaurus)
Welcome to our mythical blog! :) Here we are going to share with you some of the most beautiful, dramatic, romantic, shocking or didactic ancient mythology of our country, Greece. We originally live in Crete but the myths will be from all over Greece! As our first myth was chosen the love drama of Theseus and Ariadni, from the Minoan Mythology, the mythology of Crete. We hope you will enjoy it!
Ariadni was the daughter of king Minoas and queen Pasifai, and they lived in the famous palace of Knossos. But the myth says that there was also a second child from the union of queen Pasifai and a taurus. After king Minoas took the throne, he asked God Poseidon for his help and approval, so Poseidon sent a beautiful white taurus out of the sea waiting for king Minoas to sucrifice the animal, but king Minoas was so charmed from the beast's beauty that kept the animal in Knossos. Poseidon then furius and seeking revenge, made queen Pasifai crazy in love with the taurus and when he didn't respond to her love she asked the help of Daidalus who made a wooden cow, empty on the inside, where he advised her to hide and wait for the taurus. In 9 months a monster with human body and a taurus head was born, the well known Minotaurus. Minoas ashamed and angry hid the beast in a specially made labyrinth, where he sent young men and women from Athens as food for the beast. In the many men was also Theseus, son of the king of Athens, Aegeas. As the Prince, he was sent with the quest to kill Minotaurus and save his city from the sacrifices of blood. For this difficult task he had an important ally, the princess Ariadni who fell in love with him the minute she saw him. Before he entered the labyrinth she gave him a ball of thread to leave it behind little by little and find his way back. After the epic battle between Theseus and the Minotaurus and the death of Minotaurus, Theseus and Ariadni went to the island Dia where they had two children. But if you think that this is the happy ending of the story then you are terribly wrong... Ariadni was abandoned by Theseus who was made by the God Dionysus to leave her in order to have her for himself. Theseus then returned to Athens, making a terrible mistake that led to an other more awful ending. The ship had two pairs of sailcloths...the one was black so that king Aegeas knew the minute he saw the ship from far away that everyone was dead and a white one to point out the victory against the Minotaurus...Theseus forgot to change the black sailcloth so the king saw it, he thought his son was dead and threw himself in the sea which then was named after him as the Aegean sea. The end. :)
Minoan fresco of woman with necklace
