Mirrors (2008) and Mirrors 2 (2010)
In an old shopping complex, the mirrors appear to have the power to stalk and control people, causing gruesome deaths.
Having an unusual methodology makes for a good excuse for some gory death scenes which is most of the action. There’s also some mystery to work out in order to explain what the antagonist wants and potentially how to defeat it. Some parts of the resolutions work out well, like the demon effects near the end in the first one and the retribution in the sequel.
It’s never really explained the exact lore of the villain since reflections are ever present in everyday life it should essentially be a god power. They cover big mirrors but it’s shown to use shiny doorknobs and water as its medium too so technically it could use the reflective film of the human eye but even car wing mirrors seem to escape its reach sometimes.
The location in the first one was much more effective as it was creepy and dilapidated. Having it pristine made it less of an aesthetic threat and only really got a creepy part in the basement so the underlying horror was less effective. The actors work well enough although there’s more variety in the first film.
Both film endings were somewhat unsatisfying but more so for the first installment because there was such a long build-up and it felt like a typically predictable horror twist. For the second one it was more a matter of the very final scene since there had to be one final scene but it ended up punishing a remorseful person looking for redemption, whereas the other killings could be loosely justified.
Mirrors: 4/10 -It’s below average, but only just!-
