47. “When I picture myself happy… It’s with you.”
Practice had run later than normal but, then again, when didn’t it? When the entire team of Karasuno had the dedication to volleyball that they had (and the energy of certain first years that was seemingly endless) practice was bound to last longer than average. Mia shivered as she leaned against the wall of the gym, goosebumps forming on her exposed arms as the chill of the late night began to settle in. How was it so cold in spring?! Why didn’t the world immediately shift into summer instead of keeping hold of these incredibly cold side nights that no one could say they actually liked unless they were inside, wrapped in blankets, with several gallons of hot chocolate.
Her internal complaints were interrupted when the door to the gym swung open. She stood to the side, watching with a smile as the Karasuno volleyball team began to file out. Hinata and Kageyama flew past her, barely noticing her as they began their seemingly daily race to the schoolyard. Their energy was insane, she noted in awe, and she wished she could be as fast as they were sometimes. Second and third years followed with a far more relaxed demeanor than the others, some smiling at her and greeting her, pausing to say hello and waving goodbye when she politely declined following them. They knew, though, who she was really waiting for.
“Oh, Mia!”
She perked up as Asahi finally emerged from the room, his eyes wide with surprised and something else. Concern? His face shifted into worry, but Mia only smiled brightly at him, her face dusted with a red blush. “Hey! I didn’t have anything to do after school today so, um, I wanted to wait and see if you’d want to walk home...together?” The words trailed off as she chewed on her lip for a moment, wondering if the request was coming out worse out loud than it had the several times she had repeated it in her mind. But Asahi just smiled and gave her an embarrassed nod himself. “Sure! I’d...I’d like that.”
Mia couldn’t help but perk up and Asahi attempted to ignore the knowing, incredibly amused, stares coming from Sugawara and Daichi as they walked off in the distance, Tanaka whining somewhere about ‘why can’t I get a girl as easy as that? Damnit Asahi...”
The two walked on in the growing twilight, the sun setting over the horizon as they made their way down and up the hills that surrounded their schoolyard. As the night set in further, Mia couldn’t help but shiver at the cold that came with it. Asahi, noticing it, gave another worried gaze. “Did you bring a jacket?”
“Um, n-no,” She admitted with a sheepish smile, “But it’s fine! I’ll get warmer as I walk.”
Asahi thought for a moment, his brows knitting in the cutest way (did she just think that? she hopes she didn’t say it outloud oh god-) before he stops walking. She trials off with him and watches in surprise as he shrugs off his school jacket. Hands immediately flying up Mia could feel herself redden again. “Y-You don’t have to! You’ll be cold now!”
“I’ll be fine!” He insisted with a laugh, draping it around her shoulders before she could protest further, “I spent the past few hours warming up with practice after all.”
“I-I guess.” She admitted after a while, smiling behind the fabric as she adjusted it around her shoulders. Looking up, her eyes widened. “Asahi, wow...”
He followed her gaze and his own eyes widened. The top of the hill they were on gave a view far more beautiful than they had ever seen before as the sun set on the valleys and buildings below them. Alone on the high vantage point, Asahi couldn’t help but suck in a breath of awe before turning and looking at Mia. She was beautiful, he noted, with the smile of delight on her lips and wrapped up firmly in his own jacket. The thought made redness file against his cheeks as well, but, he couldn’t take his gaze off of her.
As if sensing the look he gave her, she turned her head to catch the stare. She immediately turned away, unsure of how to go about addressing it, but, eventually settling with, “What are you thinking about?”
“Me? Oh, um-” He rubbed the back of his neck as he paused, searching for the words that he wanted to use for a long moment before finally speaking up again, “Nothing I guess It’s just that...well. When I think about things like this and stuff! They always come to my mind...and...When I picture myself happy...it’s with you.”
The words hit her heart and Mia could only suck in a breath, carefully peering up to the boy at her side. His smile was honest and sweet, as it always was, and he was watching her with unsure embarrassment. Slowly, she smiled back and nodded a little too eagerly before stepping closer. “I...think the same way,” She assured him with a grin. The words seemed to comfort something in him, and he sighed and reached out a hand carefully. She reached out her own. Their hands entwined together, his squeezing firmly while hers fit far too perfectly in his own to be a coincidence.
“Lets go home.” He hummed thoughtfully. She could only nod. “Yeah,”
And, in that moment, the two were happy.
