The first job after Lucy’s abrupt departure, Lockwood calls Holly Luce twice without thinking and bites his tongue hard enough to bleed. Holly’s unfailingly polite about it, because Holly’s unfailingly polite about everything, but he can’t miss the way she flinches, or the way George refuses to look at either of them. He can taste his embarrassment on the backs of his teeth, bitter and coppery where it mingles with the blood from his tongue.

It's just an adjustment period, he tells himself. Sure, there’s an empty space at his right shoulder all night where he keeps looking for Lucy entirely on instinct, one he hasn’t the first idea how to go about correcting, or even if he wants to—but it’s the first night. It’s to be expected. He thinks: It’ll get better.

But really, it just gets worse.

The air was so hot, stuffy, and sticky, that it was almost palpable. No clouds offered a refuge from the cruel sun blazing over London. This weather made most people irritable. Lucy Carlyle was irritable too, but she had a good reason to feel so… it so happened that this was the week Lucy had realized that she was dying.

In the world ravaged by the Problem, teenagers still suffer from unrequited love. Lucy Carlyle, is unfortunately one of them and have contracted the worst version of this ailment: the dreadful Hanahaki disease.

He led her to the kitchen before dropping her hand, and Lucy gawked at the room. Most notably, the Thinking Cloth had been whisked away, and in its place was a red plaid thing that felt shockingly out of place without a mangled mess of scribbles. Sitting atop it were a handful of haphazardly placed candles — the ones they usually brought on jobs with them. They were spread across the kitchen counters as well, and were the soul source of light in the room.

All but two chairs had been removed from the kitchen table, and two place settings adorned it — topped inexplicably with pieces of toast. Steaming cups of tea sat beside them.

“What is this?” Lucy asked.

Lockwood stepped forward and pulled out a chair, motioning for Lucy to sit. Questioningly, she did, and Lockwood took the seat across from her.

He shrugged nonchalantly, but in the dim light of the candles, she saw his face gain the tiniest amount of color. “It seemed a waste,” he said, an edge to his tone, “for you to be all dressed up for nothing.”

Lucy gets stood up on a date, so Lockwood tries to make her feel better.

Actually, Lucy hated Lockwood and Lockwood had no idea why. He finally won her over during their joint school musical, just to run away in the end.

Now, they're together at the same university and working together on yet another musical. Lucy has shut herself off completely, afraid to get hurt again. Lockwood is doing his best.

But what happens when they keep pretending to be together for "safety" reasons?

The answer: fake dating shenanigans, (one sided) enemies-to-lovers, theatre kid antics, and more tropes galore.

Featuring: Skull the Real Boy and the rest of the Scooby Gang who tried to help Locklyle over the years and are now here to watch the world burn.
