“the ending is really heavy handed”
about that: guillermo del toros abusive father died rather recently. he’s said across multiple, multiple interviews that this is not just an adaption of frankenstein, but also something of an autobiography. he is the creature, and he is also victor. both have the best and worst parts of himself. just as mary shelley was writing about her miscarriage, and about a father who she was not getting along with at the time, and all the stressors in her life as a creative— del toro is writing about fathers and sons, about generational trauma. about forgiveness. what recourse do we have but to live?
oscar isaac stated in one interview that he and jacob elordi thought they might cut some of the last few lines in the forgiveness scene. del toro told him that they could not cut them— his father is not here anymore, and they are words he needed to hear.
