That Odd Moment

There’s just one nagging moment, just one, that fails to fade away. The only one that distorts her perfect image. The quiet wife, patient mother, loving daughter and a caring sister. To those around her, she had found her place in a foreign land. A preacher’s wife - dutiful, helpful, and all things associated with a preacher’s wife. She gave alms even after it was obvious they were cheating her. She was kind even when it was hard. She cut her good clothes so her children could have pretty clothes for Christmas. 

And, then comes that nagging moment  She’s standing in her kitchen, towering over her children. The wood smoking away in the fireplace, burning everyone’s eyes. The kerosene can right below the fireplace. The matchbox in one hand. The threat hanging in the air.
