He shrugged calmly, but his fingers continued to work themselves in and around the strand of thread hanging from the cuff of his sleeve. His dad’s jacket, passed down to him the first winter he’d had a growth spurt and hadn’t been able to fit into his old one. It now had patches on the elbows and in the pockets and liner, sewn in by his mother who was adamant that they didn’t need to spend money on a replacement when this one was perfectly good. Jughead agreed even though his father didn’t -- he’d learned to be frugal from an early age, in everything except the meals and snacks that appeased his monstrous appetite.
Winding the string around his index finger, he pulled on it again to let it come undone. Finally green eyes lifted towards hers, but didn’t remain there long before they dropped away again. Usually he would say yes to such a question, but he wasn’t feeling particularly like being alone. He had enough alone time these days it seemed, what with Archie of galavanting from one romantic encounter to the next. Time with his friends was limited. And time he spent at home even moreso what with how FP and Gladys had taken to bickering about bills and chores and everything under the sun. In fact, Velma was a warm spot in his day, and he wasn’t keen on her slipping off.
A slight jerk of his head to the side, a signal for her to come sit. “What you got there?” Jughead said with a finger pointing towards the book under her arm. “Anything I’d like?”
