It was always too bright whenever she woke up in a hospital room. Her eyes had to stay closed even though she was partly awake now, taking in the sounds of the stark room. The beeping of the monitors, the muffled voice of a nurse out in the hall, and the sound of someone’s breathing from the chair next to her bed accompanied by the soft scent of wild flowers. Voice still thick with sleep, she croaked out a quiet “Anton?”

It was a normal occurrence for the young werewolf to have dinner alone. Sometimes he’d switch up the restaurants, but more times than not he ended up at the Italian place down the road. Even on Friday nights like this when others were out on dates or at parties, he enjoyed going out and spending time outside of his apartment. It was interesting to him to see all the strangers gathered in one spot.

One in particular caught his attention before his drink arrived, and even as he looked over the menu. A beautiful girl all by herself, glancing at the time every five minutes. At first the wolf was sure her date would show. Someone that breathtaking couldn’t be stood up. But then he started to hear the pitying whispers from the waitress in the kitchen, saw the glances from other patrons, and he was walking over to her table before he could stop himself.

With a charming smile, he sat in the chair across from the girl. “Sorry I’m so late, my bike’s been havin’ trouble ever since I let Lena ride it.” He leaned close enough for only her to hear his next words. “Hiya, I’m Nick. Forget about the loser that didn’t show. Play along?”
