U.S. THAAD Missile Defense Systems Arriving In South Korea
From CNN: The first pieces of a US-built missile defense system designed to mitigate the threat of North Korean missiles arrived at the Osan Air Base in South Korea Monday night, according to the US military.
The announcement comes just a day after North Korea test-fired four ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea.
China has voiced opposition to the proposed placement of the military hardware known as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, which it sees as a threat to its own security.
“We will firmly take necessary measures to preserve our own security interest, and the US and South Korea must bear the potential consequences,” Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Geng Shuang said Tuesday.
With North Korea upping the amount of missile and nuclear tests last year, the US and South Korea have publicly stressed the need to speed up the deployment of the technology.
It’s designed to shoot down incoming missiles that threaten civilian populations, akin to shooting a bullet with another bullet in simple terms, experts say.

Romania's president on Tuesday dismissed threats by Vladimir Putinthat Romania could be targeted by Russian rockets because it hosts elements of a U.S. missile defense shield.
Last week Putin warned Romania and Poland that it would have to take retaliatory steps against Washington and its allies over the missile shield, the Romanian part of which was switched on earlier in May.
Iohannis on Tuesday repeated the message from the U.S: the newly-activated missile defense system is not directed at Russia.
"These threats without any real basis can only reconfirm that our approach to strengthen NATO security as a legitimate reaction to Russia's attitude in the Black Sea is correct,"Iohannis said.
He said although Romania was not directly affected by Russia's annexation of Crimea, neighboring Ukraine — "a country with a pro-democratic, Western calling" — now finds itself cut off from important energy resources in the Black Sea, a region which has "special significance for international security."
The Black Sea region is a potentially dangerous area, Iohannis said, as it has borders with NATO and EU states but also countries with "democratic deficits," an increasing level of cross-border crimes and political pressure being exerted from a number of different sides.
At an upcoming NATO summit in Warsaw, Romania will push for increased attention to the region, Iohannis said.

The Pentagon has halted all talks with Russia concerning its anti-missile defense shield in Europe over the Ukrainian crisis, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear and Missile Defense Policy Elaine Bunn said.
"Russia's intervention in Ukraine in violation of international law led to the suspension of our military-to-military dialogues, including civilians, and we have subsequently not continued to engage Russia on the topic of missile defense," Ms. Bunn said.
Washington has also declined to introduce any restrictions on anti-missile defense as proposed by Russia, the US deputy defense chief said.
Ms. Bunn also added that Moscow will not have command and control capabilities in the project.
Russia and NATO agreed to cooperate on the US-led ABM program in Europe at a Lisbon summit in 2010, but the dialog stalled after Washington refused to give Moscow guarantees that the project didn't threaten Russian nuclear deterrence forces.
The Kremlin initially offered NATO to build a joint European missile defense system based on a sectoral principle. This scenario suggested that every partner would be responsible for a certain region, with Russia having control of the Baltic space. This plan was shot down citing Article 5 of the alliance's collective security agreement.
