FEVER FEBRUARY DAY 14: LISA KLINK APPRECIATION DAY ❤️💕🥰💋🔥

Valentine’s Day seems a fitting time to honour the Queen of nascent P/T, Lisa Klink. She saw what we saw, and brought Tom & B’Elanna’s irresistible, magnetic attraction to fruition through her finely crafted words… and sparked hundreds (thousands?) of missing scene fanfics and codas in the process because we always want MORE.

Lisa Klink was a writer for Star Trek Voyager. According to imbd, she had her (typing) fingers in 74 episodes, either as a staff writer, executive story editor, or lead writer. Oh how we wish she had stayed until Endgame! According to the lovely and talented woman herself, she wrote four of our favourite episodes: Blood Fever, Displaced, Revulsion, & Scientific Method.

Lisa’s were some of the best Tom & B’Elanna early episodes, then she appeared to move on, alas. But she set the groundwork for one of—if not the—best Trek romances ever. Through Lisa Klink’s words, superbly acted by Roxann Dawson & Robert Duncan McNeill, Tom and B’Elanna became more that just characters manipulated on a page, they became real people navigating a relationship through trying circumstances.

We P/Ters will always be grateful to our Queen, our Goddess, Lisa Klink for her humour & her romantic heart & her ability to beautifully complicate Tom & B’Elanna’s path to true Love.

Really, you can just pretend that I didn't say it. In fact let's just pretend that I didn't—” “Shut up.”

SCIENTIFIC METHOD:

“We have been a little out of control lately.” “Do you think we really were?” “What?” “Out of control. Those aliens could have just been messing around with our hormones just to see what would happen.” “You're right, they could have. And we don't know how long they were on board. They could have been tampering with us for months“ “Well, when you think about it you did have a pretty abrupt change of heart a couple of weeks ago. What made you realise that you love me all of a sudden?” “Just a feeling. So our whole relationship might be based on some alien experiment.” “You never know.“ “Well, I think that explains it.” “I guess we should just call it off, then.” “I think so.” “Thank God we found out in time.” “Thank God.” “I don't know about you, but I'm curious to see how this experiment turns out.”

Harlots Week || Missing Scene Monday

“This Life is Full of Wonder...”

When Pa told me that Ma was still alive I didn’t believe him. Of course I didn’t. What did he think I was? A child? A cosseted boy who could be told a fairy story to help him sleep at night? I am a Wells and a North, bawdy house born and raised. I stood by and watched as Pa sunk a body into the Thames. Did he think he could tell me a comforting tale and I would believe him with a head full of wonder? I turned away from his hopeful face and let my tears soak into the pillow.

But now is it Harriet who enters the room. And somehow I know that she has no comforting tale to tell. The house is quiet still. Much too early for the walls to be shaking with the frantic rutting of culls. Harriet sits on the edge of my bed, careful not to wake me too sudden. Part of me wants to continue my pretense of sleep. To enjoy this moment of quiet, calm, and safety. But I turn my face up to her and see the tears pooling in her eyes. Her voice is thick with the tears she is trying to force back down her throat as she tells me. I turn away from her as I did with Pa. But I don’t cry. Not this time. Because I know better now. 

Charlotte is not dead. She’s fine and free. Ma was once dead too. Hanged by the neck. But she slipped through the noose and sailed away to America. She scratched and clawed her way back to me. Because she’s a Wells Woman. It will be the same with Charlotte. You’ll see.

Nancy was picked out by Mrs. Quigley from the workhouse and Margaret was sold to her for a pair of shoes. Somewhere between those inauspicious beginnings and the first time we meet them, they became the women who had Lydia Quigley arrested for kidnapping and started their own brothels. Starting from Nancy's first night at Quigley's, this is my take on that story.

FEVER FEBRUARY DAY 7: Missing Scene Monday

“I was hoping our daughter would be special but I never dreamed she’d turn out to be the Klingon messiah.”

On 7 February, 2001 Prophecy aired. And it was GLORIOUS!!!

B’Elanna, who thought she was maybe, sort of okay with her heritage now and passing it on to her child, has to confront an entire ship full of Klingons—warriors, children, and religious zealots—and she realizes how wrong she was! She cycles through embarrassment, scorn, and shame at having Klingon genes. Eventually she does come to appreciate some of the more honourable aspects of being Klingon, reciting the plea for the dead, for one. (And we learn her grandmother’s name)

But I think she learns the most about Klingon honour from her wholly human husband. When T’Greth, one of the Klingon zealots, refers to Tom and B’Elanna’s baby as a mongrel child, Tom immediately steps up to defend both his daughter and his wife.

He takes it further when he accepts a challenge—to the death—when the same jerk attempts to besmirch B’Elanna’s honour. Some, me, might say that Tom forced that challenge.

What was I supposed to say?” “How about no?” “They were all watching. There would have been a riot if I refused.” “So you’re going to get yourself killed?” “What makes you so sure I’d lose?” “Oh, please.”

“Today would be a very bad day to die.”

Of course no one dies. This isn’t the first time Tom’s been on the receiving end of a swinging bat’leth. And he gets a little training courtesy of the Klingon’s leader, Kohlar.

In the end, B’Elanna’s unborn baby does save the Klingons, but not by physically leading them to a new home world. By curing a chronic disease that they all carry - the nehret - when the Doctor uses foetal stem cells from the (also infected) baby to devise a cure. Miral Paris, the Kuvah’Magh, is the saviour of the entirety of the Klingon race in the Delta Quadrant (barring Borg drones). And baby Miral is given a warrior’s bat’leth to honour her success in battle!

This episode doesn’t have a kiss. 😑🙄 And I accidentally used the Barge of the Dead kiss in the Course: Oblivion post. 🤷‍♀️ Instead, I offer you the one from Alice: it’s fierce, protective, forgiving & accepting - all Klingon traits to aspire to - and B’Elanna is allowing her Klingon hair loose!

I haven’t seen as many missing scene/coda fics for Prophecy as I have for other episodes, but they’re out there. There’s so much to mine in this episode! And all of it good.

“Can I bring you something else?” “No, thank you.” “I haven't seen you in here before.” “You probably just didn't notice.” “Oh, I'd have noticed.”

(Tom, the best damned waiter you’ll ever find, Paris, wondering if this gorgeous customer is reading a romance novel…)

On 21 February, 2001 Workforce part 1 aired & P/Ters were very concerned! Then waiter Tom spotted worker B’Elanna and was instantly twitterpated (and protective).

He was only slightly put off by her somewhat more-than-slight belly bump and assured her that he’d very much like to be her friend. Personally, I believe that if she’d been up for more, he’d have gone for it.

And if he hadn’t been already married to that ugly knitted vest, she might have given him a chance.

Funny how in the episode where KJ metaphorically lets her hair down and thereby becomes more romantically & sexually attractive, B’Elanna puts hers up (with a bobby pin?) and is still the most compelling woman in the room. To Tom, at least.

There have been lots of missing (reunion) fics for part 2 of this episode. Not so many fics for part 1. 🤷‍♀️

A Word (or a Drabble) About Our Daily Themes: Missing Scene Monday …1/7

I’ve been asked, What’s a…? So I’ve decided to do a series of posts to explain our themed days-of-the-week. And no, you don’t have to follow the themes but it’s supposed to be fun, damnit! Plus, the original air date of Blood Fever falls on a Smutty Saturday (more on that later) so it’s serendipitous.

What’s a missing scene/coda? Well, in a general sense they’re a scene or a continuation of a scene that explains or clarifies the episode that sparked them. They enrich the ep, make it better. A lot of the time, they make it smuttier. But generally they seem to be an excuse to get inside Tom or B’Elanna’s head to finish what the episode hints at. Missing scenes land anywhere within the episode, codas finish it off. A denouement, if you will.

I like to think that lines of dialogue never uttered, or scenes never filmed that pop into a P/Ter‘s head, or simply a craving for more kicked off many a fic writing career.

Yeah, that’s likely more than 100 words.

Behold a few examples. I only decided to do this the other day & I’ve spent far too much time searching for Golden Oldie fics (those written while Voyager was still on the air). Some examples are old favourites of ours, some are newer. Hopefully, you’ll love them all.

Things Left Unsaid by Julie Evans, the Queen of codas & missing scenes, a Once Upon a Time coda. I’d rate it T/PG for a wee bit of sexytimes.

The Longest Night by Seemag, a missing scene from One. Rated G but don’t let that deter you.

The High Point by Sareki, a missing scene from Year of Hell. Rated T for the barest mention of the sex. It’s raw & sweet & true, and will get you right in the feels.
