To put my potential biases loud and clear: I voted Democrat, I'm an overseas voter, and I took the first links below that were from a) a website I recognised and b) which gave me the information I wanted to know (voter counts / turnout).
I'm by no means a statistician, or even someone who really knows much about elections.

In 2020, Biden got (roughly, rounding to nearest million) 81M votes total and Trump got 74M votes.

In 2024, Harris got 70M votes and Trump got again 74M votes. That means the top-two candidates got ( (81+74) - (74+70) ) = 11M votes fewer in 2024 than in 2020.

Nationwide, we had 65.9% voter turnout in 2020 and 64.5% in 2024 - so roughly 1% (flat) difference which (given 245M eligible - but not necessarily voting - voters) equates to about 2.45M votes. This is generally an overestimate. Which gives us (11M - 3.23 - 2.45 = 5.32M votes… unaccounted for? Which is equivalent to about 3% of the total votes that Harris and Trump got collectively.

Some are probably spoilt ballots, lost in the mail, etc. but 5M is a hell of a lot to not be explained.
I don't want this to come off like a conspiracy theory, or to fuel any, I'm just trying to help ground the discussion with numbers and sources. In an ideal world, a nonpartisan investigation into this should happen and - if something did interfere - the votes recounted where possible to account for it.
