When I first created @findourmissing_nc, I reached out to a CMPD detective about a missing black teenager who was 15 at the time. I told the detective I found her active Instagram page. The detective said: "She may have her phone but if we haven't found her, she's still missing." (Very nonchalant) The detective never asked for my name, the Instagram page name or why I was probing for answers. The next day, the teenager's flyer was removed from the Char/Meck missing persons' website. There wasn't an update, they just removed her picture. Coincidence? 🤔 I said all of that to say this, they aren't really looking for people of color "like that" unless the family of the missing person presses the issue. The detective probably reached out to the girl's family and they told the detective she returned home. If your loved one goes missing, don't let them tell you "they'll show up, we see cases like this all of the time." You know your loved one better than they do.
