Everything was calm for the units, maybe too calm for a mission as complex as this one. Truth was excited to be a part of it, especially outside of the Bunker. It was one of her first real mission without Madison, without staying behind a computer. She felt the adrenaline coursing through her body and her heart beat faster in her chest but she still looked calm and composed on the outside. She couldn’t fail, she wouldn’t fail.
Despite how enthusiast she was, Truth couldn’t stop thinking that her brother was in a lot more danger than her down there. She couldn’t think like this, she couldn’t be distracted by her relationship with him nor with anyone else, but she couldn’t focus on what she was doing as long as she didn’t check on him either. She needed to hear his voice, just for one split second.
She switched to a different radio frequency and hesitated a moment. “Brother?” Truth whispered in Russian to her watch once she was on a private frequency. She knew not many people spoke Russian at the agency, and if Hamilton didn’t reply and someone else heard it, it would just sound like a random noise.
Two missions, each with very specific targets. Hydra has tasked four members to locate two things to help further their goal of taking down SHIELD for the last time.
There is a specific object located at the local military base, Fort A.P. Hill, of unknown power and Asgardian make that is rumored to have just been found. Hydra has tasked Dmitri Smerdyakov and Ophelia Sarkissian with retrieving this item before it’s transferred to a SHIELD storage location permanently. Flash Thompson is currently stationed at this base so they may have to watch out for him.
The second team consists of Florencia de la Garza and Laura Brown. The two Hydra legacies have been tasked with retrieving a scientific compound known only as ‘Venom.’ It is currently located as Oscorp so the two woman have been told to capture the CEO of the company, Harry Osborn, to aid in locating the compound and taking it to Hydra for future study and use.

Wesley set himself up in his car, making sure that he had everything that he might need just in case of an emergency. There were still groups of people marching around, but it didn't look like it was getting dangerous. Mainly they were holding up signs with little yells being heard. He focused most of his attention on the laptop in front of him as he broke into the security cameras in the building and listened in to what Maya was saying. She was supposed to kill him today and he didn't know if she would do it. He hoped that she wouldn't but he had his gun just in case.
Ever since Wesley had suggested for Maya to spend even more time with Ernesto she had stayed at his place, something that had come to both easily since they were fond of each other even though it was clear that he was more intrigued than vice versa. He was a friend, one she had only met in the first place because it was expected of her to kill him. But time made that decision she was struggling with ever since being activated for this mission easier with each passing day. She wouldn’t do it. Couldn’t. And she came to realize it the second when Wesley was telling her to do just that. Kill him. She had nodded in response, remaining quiet the entire time as they made their way back to his place and the gun - that first had rested heavily at her side got lighter as the moments passed. Now in his apartment Maya was sitting opposite from him. Tonight was different. He was quiet. Just like he had been quiet when he had seen her fighting. It was a suspicious silence, caution laying in the air and yet Maya felt at ease, now, that she knew that Ernest Rojas wouldn’t be killed by her.
Wesley moved the security camera across the street so that he could look into Ernesto’s room. He couldn’t see much, only that they appeared to be sitting and judging by the silence on Maya’s end, they weren’t speaking. It seemed odd and since he wasn’t in the room, he couldn’t tell what was going on. This could be really bad. “Say something Maya. Or at least do something.” He readjusted himself in his seat and kept his eyes glued to the camera. She better not try running. Wesley knew what he would have to do in that situation and it was definitely something he didn’t want to do.
“You are quiet tonight.“ she whispered, a frown on her features as she watched Ernesto, knowing that Wesley was listening and that he wanted results. Results she better gave him before he did something she couldn’t undo. “Just in thought …“ the male returned before looking up, meeting her gaze with something that appeared to be hurt and that moment Maya realized that he knew. Her eyes widened only a little bit, the moment too unreal to really believe that this was happening as he just gazed at her, calmly, distanced. And a part of her broke, knowing that she had disappointed him even if she never had returned his feelings, even if every touch and every intimate moment they had shared had been a lie. What she had told him - or at least the majority of it - … it had bee then truth. She shook her head ever so lightly, the gesture not obvious to someone watching from the outside but clear enough to the man in front of her. “You work too much. You look exhausted.“ she said in response, the words leaving her lips mechanically yet she hoped them to sound believable. “I worked on something very important today. Let me show you.“ Ernesto stated and turned his laptop around, the screen now facing her and what she saw caused her to gasp.
Wesley could tell that something wasn't right. He had been listening to them for the past few weeks and he knew how their conversations normally went. But there was something off about this that he didn't like. Something was definitely going to happen. He pursed his lips and watched the camera for any sign of what that might be. "Maya, don't let him distract you. Stay focused." Even as the words, left his mouth, he knew that she wouldn't listen. They never listened to their handlers. He grabbed the gun beside him and kept his eyes on the screen prepared to jump out at a moment's notice.
One the screen Maya saw a file along with a picture of the person that it was about and any important information. A Division file. Her file. She took out the earbud, smashing it with one of the thick heavy glasses that were on the table. Wesley would come to realize that something was wrong. He would come up and end what she simply couldn’t do. And she had no intentions of letting him either. There was no way in denying anything he believed to know. At least now she could tell him the truth without Wesley’s voice in her mind and without him able to hear anything she might tell Ernesto. He looked at the broken earbud and seemed to ease even if only for a brief moment. “I remembered your file. It took some time but I remembered it eventually. Maya Andreyev.“ His voice sounded almost disappointed if it wouldn’t have been for the pity accompanying it. “Your crimes didn’t match up with those of other recruits, nor did your past records show any significant actions that lead to the assumption that you had any special potential for this way of living. Under different circumstances they wouldn’t have bothered with you. They would have let you stay in jail until you served your sentence and not wasted another thought. But recruiting you was just too easy, wasn’t it? No family left to look for you, no friends either … You were alone. Do you consider Division to be your family now? Are you grateful for that ‚second chance‘ given to you?“ Maya didn’t respond, his words hitting home as he kept his eyes resting on her while she considered her next move. He had trusted her, which was when he had made his first mistake … But by showing her everything he knew about Division, showing that he truly believed to make a difference … she had started trusting him as well. “Are you going to kill me?“ The question pulled her out of her thoughts and she looked up, considering her answer. A simple no would have sufficed but they had no time. Not anymore. Standing up she quickly walked towards the other end of the room, the one away from Wesley’s view and that led to the fire escape stairs. The path was clear, he could make it if she just bought him enough time. “You need to leave. And we’ve got no time for questions either.“ Maya explained, not looking at him as she scurried towards the front door of his apartment, locking it quickly before walking back to Ernesto. He had all the information that was needed to bring Division to a fall. And there was no time to talk. “Pack your hard drive, money … You can’t use credit cards or your passport. Hitchhike if necessary and stay away from observed areas. Don’t go to Leonardo. Don’t even contact him unless it’s really needed. And hide somewhere where Division expects you the least.“
Wesley rushed out of his car the minute he heard complete silence. He knew the sound of an empty earbud all too well and now he knew that Maya was going to try to run--or atl east let him escape. He knew this would happen. She spent too much time there and not enough time focused. She was going to let him escape and he needed... "Daddy!" His head turned on instinct, looking for the owner of the voice. He felt his heart sink as he saw a young girl with dark hair standing next to a woman with messy brown hair. Even from behind, he felt that he would know that hair anywhere. "Cassandra?" He felt his heart sink. What was she doing here? Didn't she know that Venezuela was not safe for a teenaged girl? He had to get them to safety. "Elizabeth! Cassandra!" He jogged toward them and was about to call out their names again when the sound of a gunshot went off and Elizabeth fell to the floor.
Wesley panicked at the sight, but nothing stopped him from running forward. No she couldn't be dead. She was supposed to be safe. She was always supposed to be safe. He pushed aside the rioters that were now starting to cry out louder at the injustice that was wrecked upon them, He didn't care about any stupid injustice. All he wanted was to make sure his daughter was safe and sound. He continued pushing until finally he got to the girl who's mother was crying over her as blood soaked her pale dress. Wesley held his breath but slowly let it go as he noticed the girl's brown eyes. That wasn't her. That wasn't Elizabeth. He took a deep breath and stumbled away from her, his mind still trying to process what happened. He closed his eyes and walked away, trying to pull himself together. Maya. She was going to try to leave. Without another moment to waste, he ran up into the apartment building and then up the stairs.
The sound of a gun shot caused her to jump and Maya turned around with a swift movement, her eyes focusing on the front door for only a second before she gave Ernesto all her attention once again. “Go! Now!“ she told him as panic started setting in while Maya desperately tried to stay in control. And thankfully Ernesto listened. He probably believed that everything had been a lie, that he didn’t know her at all. But whatever he though to know, Maya was the only one to truly know the truth. They were prisoners and he was probably their only chance to break free. With a sigh she watched him climbing out of the window and towards the fire escape stairs, giving him a weak smile yet got none in return. “Don’t allow anyone to control you. You are free and you have something many people would kill for. Make sure to give this info to the right person. I trust you, Ernesto.“ And with those words he was gone, disappearing into the night and hopefully away from harm’s way. It had taken Wesley longer than expected to make it up to the journalist’s place, yet her smile didn’t cease. In fact, it had grown while she kept staring out of the window. “He’s gone …“

Wesley leaned back in his chair and started fiddling around with his phone as the flight attendant told them that it was safe to start walking around the cabin. He took his seat belt off and started looking through the internet for any information about Venezuela. The last time he was there it was less than ideal and although he made it out with his pockets full and body still intact, he vowed to never go back. Yet here he was escorting Maya on her second mission. Taking a deep breath, he did his best to stay calm about it. For all he knew they were dead already, although he figured he wouldn't be so lucky. He pulled himself out of his thoughts and glanced toward Maya, giving her a gentle grin. "How are you holding up?"
Maya had remained silent on their way to the airport and into the plane, refusing to say anything in fear her voice would give in and reveal just how horrified she was. Maybe if her first mission would have gone better she wouldn’t have been such an emotional wreck, but with her past experiences and the awareness of having to leave Valentina behind while she believed that the other needed her, Maya was barely able to remain sane. ‘He has a family. A wife, children ... You never told me that he has a family and when I found out it was already too late to …’ The words still haunted her, the knowledge that she was responsible for the death of two loving parents eating her up … no matter how cruel they may had been to others. Her now dead handler had told her that this was her job, that she had to do this for Division and her country. But if he believed that she hadn’t heard the doubts in his voice than he was mistaken. Would Wesley tell her the same? If yes, then he could just as well die as her previous handler had … The thought caused her to bite her lower lip in guilt as she swallowed hard, trying to banish such dark thoughts and thankfully the sound of his voice pulled her out of the depths of her mind before her thoughts could wander off further. She looked at him, only for a brief moment but long enough to give him an answer. One that would prove her verbal response a lie. “Great … When are we there?“ she murmured after she averted her gaze again, looking out of the window instead.
Wesley wished that Maya wouldn’t bother lying to him. It wasn’t that he found it annoying that she thought she could get away with lying when it was very clear that there was something on her mind, but more to the fact that if there was something wrong, he wanted to help her. For her sake, he decided not to press the matter, but if he saw something amiss with her later, then he knew he would have to act. “We should be there in a couple of hours.” He put his phone away and took out the Spanish translation of The Princess Bride to help him refresh on the language. The would come off as Americans but if Wesley bumped shoulders with his past, it was best to be prepared. “Do you have any questions? Concerns? You know that you can ask me virtually anything.” he asked as he turned to his favorite chapter. Most people never took advantage of him saying that and he wondered if Maya would finally be the one to ask him a good question.
Maya nodded in response to his answer as she focused her gaze on the clear sky and the white clouds beneath them, blocking any sight on the landscape that was resting hundreds of miles under them. She wondered what they would do if the plane crashed, wondered what her last thoughts would be in that very moment once she realized that her life was over. Quite obscure thoughts to have but Maya guessed they were accurate when in a situation that would result in either her death or that of her target’s. If Ethan had achieved anything then it was to take her hope from saving any lives when she was called to be their reaper. “Why The Princess Bride?“ Maya suddenly wondered with a shrug unsure if he even had noticed that she looked back at him, her features still feigning disinterest as she nodded towards the direction of the book which he had in his hands and which looked quiet used. She didn’t take him for someone to enjoy such literature but then again she had come to learn quite early not to jump to assumptions.
Wesley laughed softly, remembering when Nathan had asked him a similar question on his mission. “It was my favorite book growing up. I like the book within a book sort of tale. Not to mention that my parents named me after the main character.” The last part was a technical lie, but only a partial one so it didn’t count in his books. “You have anything else to ask? Something related to the reason why we’re going to Venezuela?” He knew that majority of the people in planes didn’t care about other people, but he also knew that people liked snooping in on conversations and it was better to be safe than sorry in this case. He started to read his book once again, waiting patiently for Maya to ask him something. He hoped that she would take the bait otherwise he would have to be a little more direct with her.
“You mean about the man I am ordered to kill?“ Maya asked, finally looking him right in the eyes, not caring for caution as her handler did even if her voice remained low. Low, yet steady, making clear that she didn’t fear him. If anything he was a pawn of Division. Just like she was … They were both in the same boat and yet fought for different sides, or so it seemed. With the authority supporting him though - or the other way around - she knew that she had no say in this. But then again, wasn’t it easier to believe that? To just give in to her fate and do as she was told? Yes, it definitely was. It also raised her chances of returning to Val and Red, to Niko, Rachel and Cambria. To Aidan, who almost had lost a very close person. Rachel had been right, she couldn’t just leave them alone in this war. No matter the odds.
All the trouble that Wesley is going through to keep things calm and quiet and comes out and says it straight out. He grit his teeth and forced himself not to look around which might make people suspicious. He gave her a sharp look before letting his eyes dart around and assured himself that no one heard her. “We’re on a plane on our way to a politically unstable country and you start talking about killing people. You might as well yell, I’m a terrorist on the top of your lungs.” He rolled his eyes and looked down to his book, although he wasn’t reading the words. “I assume you did your research. Or enough of it.” He meant the file of course. He wasn’t going to blow his cover just because Maya decided that discrepancy is beyond her capabilities.
The only reaction he got was her looking out of the window again, after he scolded her quietly as if she wasn’t aware of the huge impact her words might have had if heard by someone. “You probably shouldn’t propose something like that since it seems like I’d be dumb enough to say just that. You might not have noticed, but my voice carries.“ she muttered under her breath, before looking down sadly, focusing on a dirty spot on the plane’s walls before suddenly shutting the window with a swift movement. She used to find joy in gazing out of a plane’s window but even that Division had taken from her. There weren’t really any far away places she strived to visit if they were all connected to a killing mission.
Wesley rolled his eyes at her, officially done with trying to have a conversation with her at the moment. He knew that she didn’t want to be there and that she would rather be in her apartment doing whatever she did there rather than having to go on this mission. He understood that feeling. He would rather be anywhere than on his way to Venezuela at that moment, but there was nothing they could do. No matter what she said, they had to do this and the sooner she realized that the better. “The plane should be landing soon. You should get some rest before then. Who knows what will happen when we touch land.” He hoped nothing bad, but he knew not to count on it. Taking a breath, he focused on his book once more and allowed Maya her small moment of peace.
