I absolutely loved my time with Mrs. Greening’s 5th grade class this morning!!! After reading “In November,” we talked about my jobs as a nurse and as Miss Massachusetts and discussed the importance of working hard and doing your best. Many of the students had a good grasp on why we all need to serve and help people, which was music to my soul! The students had thoughtful questions, which sparked meaningful discourse. Historic Ned's Point Lighthouse is located in my hometown, which is named Mattapoisett from a Wampanoag word for "place of rest." John Quincy Adams (then Massachusetts Congressman and former President) played a vital role in Congress appropriating $5,000 to build this lighthouse, which was first lighted in March 1838. This lighthouse was necessary, as Mattapoisett was a center for shipbuilding, whaling, and coastal trade. I am proud to be a University of Massachusetts alum! From volunteering for the Global Health Collaborative and being a member of Class of 2016 Cabinet to singing the National Anthem and Alma Mater at my commencement, I learned and accomplished more than I could ever have imagined. My transition to professional nursing practice was almost seamless, thanks to the @umassd College of Nursing and my incredible professors and clinical instructors. I am forever grateful.
