When you first meet, Mikey is a little...confused why his new friend chooses not to speak. He loves speaking and can’t comprehend why someone would choose not to.
But as your friend, Mikey makes it his duty to support your decision! After all, “I can talk plenty for the both of us!!”
If you use it or have an interest in learning, Mikey will 100% be down to learn sign language(s) to have active conversations with you so you aren’t limited to facial expressions, charades, or a thumbs up/down.
(Side note, due to Mikey being so close with his mute friend, the two are not allowed to be a team during charade games at the Lair because they’re too powerful as a team)
When Mikey starts developing feelings for his friend, he tries to drop subtle hints.
Ya know, casually grabbing his friend’s hand to hold then releasing the hand because they need the hand to sign. Wrapping his arms around them in tight hugs, not wanting to let go, etc.
And that’s when his friend hits him with the most dizzying display of trust he’s ever experienced.
His friend talks to him. In their voice. It’s gravelly and unused but to Mikey it’s one of the most cherished things in the multiverse to him.
Expect him to be stunned in silence for a while before he gets big eyes and pulls his friend in for a bone crushing hug while he gushes about how proud he is to be trusted by them.

Very similar to 2012 Mikey, he’ll be a little confused why someone chooses not to speak but respects and supports their decision nonetheless.
He’ll also learn some sign language to make communication with his friend easier but he’ll also add lots of arts and crafts to help his friend express themselves as much as possible without speaking. He’s a very energetic and expressive person by nature so he has no problem with finding the best outlet to help his friend express themself.
As clever as Mikey can be, it will take a long while to realize that his feelings toward his best friend are no longer platonic but romantic. And that event will come in the form of his friend speaking to him in the privacy of a New York rooftop pillowfort.
A simple quiet, hoarse “Thank you” followed by a hand squeeze and a wide grin is all it takes for Mikey to spiral into ten different emotions at the same time, absolutely reeling at the fact you trust him enough to speak to him and dEAR SWEET PIZZA SUPREME IN THE SKY YOU SPOKE TO HIM AND WHY IS HIS HEART BEATING SO FAST, STOP IT!!
He may or may not give his friend a blank look of shock for a few seconds before absolutely melting while stuttering out a “You’re welcome” and a tight hug.
Yeah this boy is absolutely smitten, help him.
