Remember that every mistake is a lesson. Every lesson is a perspective. And every perspective is a new way to understand the world
Jon Sourbeer, DigiPen c/o 2017
Grad Quote: In context
“DigiPen forced us to make mistakes because we were forced to constantly apply and test what we thought we knew. And through that, we learned what we didn’t know. About art. About science. About design. But most importantly about people.
It taught us that people are best when they don’t fear their mistakes. When they know that they can speak their minds, unleash their creativity, and build without fear. And it taught us that when you do not fear their mistakes, they do not fear their mistakes. When you do not fear their critiques, they do not fear giving them to you. ... Gain courage from your experience – gain insight from your failures. No matter where you go in life, no matter how you change, no matter the highs and lows, do not forget what you learned here, from your mistakes.
Remember that every mistake is a lesson. Every lesson is a perspective. And every perspective is a new way to understand the world.”
Creating the Musical, first steps
For me, the Gold Standard in theatre is to read the beautifully written “Act I“ by Moss Hart. “Act I” will walk you through the tortuous trial and error of a beginning but ultimately successful playwright. And then there is “Amadeus” by Peter Shaffer. It is the painful but creative journey of Mozart’s life through the eyes of his jealous enemy, Salieri. The genius of Amadeus is that it’s not a linear plot but a wildly theatrical and unexpected experience. So the first steps in the creative process are to educate yourself. Go see every piece of theatre you can. Then, find an original idea. Put your music and lyrics to work so they advance the action. Surprise and delight the audience. They deserve it.
