she remembered this kind of darkness, the kind that was full of ghosts; old recollection haunting her every step, every rhythmic tap of a bare foot falling against something cold and hard. it was all she could hear, their echo the only thing keeping her company. it stopped bothering her after a while, and she drove a cold gaze into the edge of the lake she would eventually happen upon.
nothing ground-breaking there, just a girl staring solemnly back-- eugh, why did she look like that? she’d done what she needed to do, now she can finally let go. wasn’t that what she wanted?
in an attempt to wash away the exhaustion, the force captain lowered to her knees at the bank of the lake, gingerly gathered some water into her palms, and splashed it over her face. shaking off the excess, she swiped the back of her rest over her eyes. she was never a big fan of water, but maybe it’d do her some good just this once.
dropping her arm, she peered into her reflection again-- and found a sad little kid staring back at her. her brows drew together tightly and she forgot herself a moment, disarmed by her own uncertainties... before she made her thoughts her own again, and with a yell, plunged her claws into the water, shattering the image of her own face shimmering upon its surface.
dragging deep gashes through the memories, sweeping her hands side to side in a savage frustration now, catra tossed water aside toward an unsuspecting stranger in her rage, shortly after glaring daggers their way, flaring, “ what’re you looking at?! ”
