Are you dating that grim guy?

          “ who is this grim you speak of? if you are referring to my fiance, i suppose i should applaud you for labeling him in such a manner. you’re right, he is rather grim. at the very least, the prospect of our marriage is grim considering he only cares for his work. ” the concept is amusing though, to say the very least, because if not for her fiance, she’d call out the fact that her dating anyone is far-fetched. dating is too idealistic for her at the moment. as much as she wants to marry for love, she isn’t naive enough to believe she could do anything under her father’s now watchful eye. 

          “ do you know my fiance? if you do, could you tell me his dislikes   —   for scientific reasons of course. ” as in she’d love to touch upon more of his pet peeves the next time they meet. if only he would cancel the engagement as it is,  just how outrageous did she have to get for him to decide she’s not marriage material? that she’s too much for him to deal with? for someone who has difficult holding onto people in her life, she never thought it would be him that tries to hold on even if it’s for his own personal gain. then again … putting it that way makes it much less surprising.

what is it about your fiance that you despise so much?

          “ i really dislike repeating myself. is it not clear enough? he’s boring. ” but the truth is, hearing it put that way, that she despises him, makes her hesitate just long enough that it’s uncharacteristic of her. direct, decisive, demanding. those words suit her much better than cautious, hesitant, and afraid. at least, that’s how she wishes to be viewed. knowing what she wants and insisting on it makes her appear far worse than a male doing the same. if a man makes orders, if he takes as he pleases, he’s assertive, dominant, a real man. but a woman? unheard of, isn’t it? what brazenness to speak out of hand, how impossibly modern that a woman takes charge for herself. 

          but that’s what she is towards him, a brat, just as she is to many others. anything and everything she can manage short of inciting her father’s anger too much to convince her fiance to call the arrangement off, but hate? no, if anything, she hates how much he reminds her of her father. if anything, she hates how he doesn’t see beyond the superficial layer she presents, just as her father doesn’t. if anything, she hates that this is such a traditional arrangement, that compared to her, he’s considered more fitting to run the company she’s been working for and coveting her entire life, all while hiding it. he drips of the desire to run his father’s company and is praised for it, admired, while she can’t do the same for a single second. “ at least he’s not horrible to look at. ”

What do you think of your fiance? And what about Dohwan?

          “ why the both of them? ” though the idea that it would absolutely piss dohwan off to be mentioned along with her fiance is amusing, she does find it odd. to her, they simply don’t compar   —   well, actually … she does suppose there’s a few similarities. in her eyes, they’re both all work and no play, even if it’s more like all work and eating in dohwan’s case. they both would prefer she act more ladylike, whatever the hell that means. both her fiance and dohwan stay by her side out of obligation, even if the reasons differ. to her, taeyoung is bound by their engagement and dohwan is bound by whatever bond they still have lingering from their childhood that neither seem capable of letting go of. 

          “ how many times do i have to say it: my fiance is boring. he’s all business and i can’t   —   ” she almost says ‘ can’t see myself being happy with him ’ but she doesn’t know if she’d fully allow herself to be happy with anyone; she’d have to trust someone enough first, she supposes. “ and dohwan is … he’s dohwan. what else am i supposed to think of him other than he is who he is, unapologetically so, and so am i. ”

do you think you're ready for the married life?

          “ since i don’t want this marriage, of course not. ” and, truth be told, until her fiance says otherwise, she has no true choice in the matter   —   unless she can manage to escape her father’s clutches and, short of faking her own death as bella suggested she do, it’s damn near impossible to do so. “ i don’t even want to be married right now. i’m only twenty-three and there’s much more i’d rather do than be married. what is married life? from everyone i’ve seen enter one, it’s boring, an outdated tradition, a burden to most and yet it’s necessary in business to seem more accomplished. a trophy wife on one hand and a phone in the other. that’s how she foresees her future going with her fiance if they do marry. 

          “ even if someone else were to ask, i’d say no ” which, for the record, she did. she said no to dohwan when he asked in an effort to free her from the arranged marriage she’s set up for now and the thought of being married in and of itself doesn’t appeal to her. “ marriage is a poor social construct. i’m more surprised that anyone would expect me to abide to such a thing. ”
