I’m actually still so mad at His Black Tongue by Mitchell Lüthi.
He very specifically sets the first story in 1349. He wants to mention the Black Death, so that’s fair enough.
But then he proceeds to have a character smoking a fucking pipe in 1349. Tobacco is an indigenous American plant. Columbus blunders into the Americas in 1492. Europeans didn’t start smoking it until the 1600s.
That’s a 250+ year anachronism.
It’s like reading a book set in 1775 where people are buying labubus.
Couldn’t finish the book. I wanted to read a medieval horror story, but unfortunately for me Mitchell Lüthi had zero interest in writing one.
He’s written at least three books now that purport to be medieval settings. He seems to think medieval settings are a wheelhouse of his. Can’t imagine what other medieval labubus he’s got in those lmao
Lord, please grant me the confidence of a mediocre white man writing genre fiction 🙏
