Wise and resolute, Highfather is the leader of the godlings of New Genesis. Many centuries ago, Highfather led New Genesis in its war with its sister planet, Apokolips. The conflict proved costly with many casualties on both sides. Seeing the war as untenable for both sides, Highfather proposed a peace accord with the ruler of Apokolips, Darkseid. A treaty was established and to seal this pact, Highfather and Darkseid exchanged their respective sons Scott and Orion.
Orion proved an unruly son, yet Highfather’s steadfast devotion ultimately won out. With the strength of Darkseid and the morals of Highfather, Orion would go on to become the greatest warrior of both worlds.
As for Highfather’s biological son, Scott, the lad was able to resist Darkseid’s efforts to corrupt him. He ultimately escaped Apokolips and fled to Earth where he became the superhero escape artist known as Mister Miracle.
Years later, When Darkseid sought to conquer Earth, warriors from New Genesis came to stop the slaughter. Highfather decreed Earth under his protection; as such any further hostilities would be a violation of their pact. A bitter Darkseid was forced to withdraw.
Darkseid continued to furtively defy their peace accord by attacking numerous worlds in his search for the Anti-Life Equation. Aware of these transgressions, Highfather sent his forces too fend off Darkseid’s attacks. Led by Orion, the forces of New Genesis soundly defeated those of Apokolips time and again.
Actor Mitchell Ryan provided the voice for Highfather, with the New God first appearing in the twenty-sixth episodes of the second season of Superman: The Animated Series, ‘Apocalypse... Now! Part II.’
