Abandoned WIP Wednesday

It's the end of the month again, so it's time for an update on my abandoned projects. Once again, I'm sorry to say that there isn't much progress! This time around, I want to focus solely on my brain hat.

If you remember, my brain hat was a project that I started in 2020. It was a pink ribbed hat with I-cords knit around the sides in squiggles to make it look like a brain. It was meant to be a cute little accessory for Halloween.

Making the hat was the easy part, but I hand-knit each of the icords and quickly ran out of steam. It was the goal to finally purchase an icord maker and finish this in time for Halloween. Well, we are still a few months out, but take a look at where we are now!

I've removed all the icords from the hat. They're a bit squiggly from being sewn down for so long. My first step is actually to make the hat a little bit longer. I plan to use a skin-toned color so that the ribbing matches my skin, and then it looks as though my brain is popping out. Then I'm going to resew the existing icords back on the hat and make any new ones to fill the gaps.

My goal is to have this finished by Halloween! I think it's doable!

Next up in my progress updates is my knitting. I've slowed down on this as the weather got hotter but I'm nearly done with the 3rd row. I weave in all my ends at the end of the row and I'm quite smug about my good judgment on that front.

A Note on Mitered Squares

Mitered squares have two rows:

Knit across.

Knit to center 4 st, k2tog, ssk\k2tbl.

This looks wrong. This looks completely wrong, because it should be k2tbl\k2tog, so they turn inward.

This stashbusting WIP is working up nicely, I've been happy with the progress I've made considering it's difficult for me to see anything through. It's easier when there's a practical reason, like needing more space in my home. So this is partly a method of cleanup that's a lot more fun and unobtrusive than, say, vacuuming.

Since the squares are joined as they're worked along, there came a point when this stashbuster was too unwieldly to carry in my bag and attend to whenever I had to wait for a long time away from home. I'm considering making more panels of mitered squares joined together to be sewn to the main pieces afterwards as a solution. The joy of taking my hobby with me outweighs my personal distaste for manually sewing numerous parts all together.

In an odd way, it's reassuring how I've had the opportunity to keep working with yarn. It's one of the few things that I can reliably do when I'm too tired for other creative outlets. And it's also the least scary math I've ever had to do.

Which brings me to some things I'd like to try out this year. I'd like to make a sweater from the yoke downwards, learn brioche knitting more effectively, make a pair of mittens, and a few other things to be kept under wraps for now.

Mitered Squares Blanket! Behold: Shots of the Finished Object!! Washed, dried, and in use for two (2) days already. No pattern (I mitered 63 squares with my heart), but the yarn is Lily Sugar’n Cream, colorways Kelp (for the squares) and Jade Mist (for the five-stitch i-cord border).
