24 kouga/kaoru/rei

24. a sleepy kiss

Kaoru's been working on a new painting and now she has a blotch of purple ink staining the hollow of her throat and Rei is maybe a little bit obsessed with it. Or, you know, maybe not obsessed with it, but it was the first thing he saw this morning, owing to having had his face pressed up against the side of her neck when he woke up. It is, specifically, waterproof india ink, which he knows because she told him yesterday that was what she was working with, and it's sort of a comma shape where it curls down over the edge of her collarbone. He wants, very vaguely, to bite it, but that would definitely wake her up.

There's a shift behind him and then an arm drapes heavily over his waist and Kouga says, very quietly, "What time did she actually come to bed?"

"Fuck, like...half past one, you know how she gets when she's working. Don't make that face at me, I can't make her sleep on schedule any more than you can."

"What face."

"I can feel you frowning."

A beat, and then a huff, and the frown pressed against the back of his shoulder morphs into something that's only really part of a kiss. A third at most. Laughing, he rolls over, takes his usual moment to appreciate Kouga's absurd bedhead, and then leans up for the other two thirds of that kiss, and maybe also some others.

Maybe ten minutes later there's a stirring next to them and Kaoru mumbles, "I went to high school with at least three girls who would actually kill to wake up to a view like this."

Rei snorts. Kouga, naturally, looks faintly puzzled, but just as naturally doesn't question it and instead says, "You got ink on your collarbone?"

"Listen, you know how it gets with ink painting, you've seen." Kaoru blinks at the light coming in from the window and scrunches up her face before rolling over to shove her face into Rei's shoulder. "I'm still sleepy."

It takes a bit of twisting, but Rei manages to kiss her on the crown of the head, and then is pressed into the mattress even harder as Kouga leans over him to do the same. "Go back to sleep," Kouga says, while Rei debates the merits of wiggling free versus allowing himself to be smothered by Kouga's pectorals, "you don't have anything you need to do today."

"Have to call my editor."

"In the afternoon."

"Good point. You're going to smother Rei if you keep leaning on him like that."

"No, it's ok," Rei says, "I've made peace with it."

He feels the curl of Kaoru's smile against his skin. "Gonza said he was going to make blackberry scones for breakfast."

"I am no longer at peace with it, get off me." Rei pushes until Kouga rolls off him. "Where are my pants?"

"On the chair." Kaoru snuggles back down into the pillows as Kouga pulls blankets back up around her shoulders. "Comb Kouga's hair before you go eat. Kouga, let Rei comb your hair, it's a mess. Don't go fight any Horrors without telling me." She's already falling back asleep. "And save me some scones."
