She shouldn’t have done this and she doesn’t say that often. She got her own types of rules and morals for that. It’s a reason she got into the academy to begin with and ended up with high scores on her graduation. 

It could all go wrong, she could lose her badge, her spot within the family that is the MPD, but she shook it off. Risks had to be taken sometimes and she wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t for the people she cared about. 

Dani eyed the envelop as if it had a decease. Whatever was in there could either change everything for the better or just ruin a lot of things, was this really what she should be doing? With a deep breath she snatches the mail from the table, opening the back and sliding out papers, pictures, evidence all over the table. 

She stares at it for a good while, not saying anything. The tears come next, but she ignores them. “It doesn’t matter anymore, I need you.”

injoon woke up much too late and was able to skip the morning rush hour, thankfully for him. he would rather avoid the lines and the irritated workers that were forced from their lack of sleep and needed caffeine to open their eyes. injoon much rather preferred the bitter taste of the drink than really needing it, but that was also in the off chances that he wanted to drink coffee to begin with.

no, this wasn’t for him this time. maybe a co-worker of his had gotten upset with something he said and now one of the higher ups was forcing him to fix it. utter bullshit when he was only telling the truth, but they had to work together and he figured a free cup coming from him could be used as a temporary peace offering until the project was done.

there was no line, and injoon looked up to the menu the moment he walked in. the problem was, he had no idea what this person liked. how the hell could he supposedly choose? “what’s a good drink to give to someone you don’t know well?” he asked first.

but then froze as if he met eyes with medusa.

that was, right after he had noticed just who was behind the counter. he could never forget the way the other looked no matter how much time it’s been since he laid eyes on him; the sharp lines of his chin, the slant of his lids, and even the mark right above his lips. it’s been ingrained into his memories almost as much as he knew the back of his hand. but how?

“then don’t,” he shoots back just as firmly. yet seokmin has both of his hands raised in front of himself, a shopping bag hanging upon his left elbow. to be caught in this kind of situation… “i’m sure you’re a good person, aren’t you? i’m unarmed. are you going to hurt an unarmed civilian?”

more like a fellow hitman, but what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.

it’s comical how seokmin always manage to be forgetful when it counts the most. just earlier he realized he had forgotten to buy the yeast for his banana bread halfway home, and now he just recalled that he left his trusty pocket knife on his dresser. how can a hitman not carry any weapon with him everywhere he goes? that’s the dumbest shit seokmin has ever heard. 

well, when it comes to worse, at least he has a couple of eggs to throw at this guy’s face. that could slow him down, right? 

Was is it the big black hoodie that scared the guy, the fact that you weren’t able to see his face or perhaps the fact that his hands were covered in blood that scared the guy? What was is that made the guy act like this, sure Min had met people who reacted like this before, but that was when he actually wanted to kill them, with this guy? He had no intention of hurting them, at least not unless Lynx told him to.

But perhaps it was a bit cute how the guy reacted, and Min chuckled as he took off his hood, immediately sending the guy a smile and grabbing their arm to remove it from their face “no seriously, I have no intention of hurting you” and while Min might be a good liar, this wasn’t a lie. “Are you busy? I want to grab a drink with you”, it was the usual deal, he was simply just looking for someone to take with him home for the night, nothing else.

the laughter that comes out of his mouth is loud and unapologetic, almost as if seokmin is genuinely humored. and maybe he is. “ya, have anyone told you that it’s not nice to judge a book by it’s cover?”

it’s rare to meet someone as honest as… whatever her name is. he wonders what could possibly led her to that first impression. could it be the hair color? or his clothes? he’s always sure to face people with a smile, maybe she’s not used to that?

“anyway. enough jokes. i watch my cat for a bit while i go inside, please?” seokmin puts his hands together in front of his chest, an apologetic smile upons his lips. “five minutes tops. i need to find this recipe book before it’s all sold out.”

“you look like the rich type, but i can buy you coffee or cake in exchange for your brave and selfless sacrifice. what do you think?”

          more often, she’s not the type to grant favors. not without some connection, not without some benefit to herself, but luckily enough ( for him anyway ) easing her boredom is enough benefit for her to at least give pause. why he couldn’t leave the cat at home escapes her and she’s never been much of a cat person either but at least the animal doesn’t seem unpleasant. it just so happens that she prefers dogs, but all cute creatures are her weakness, one she doesn’t like to show at that. 

          five minutes, she thinks, leaning down to take a closer look at the pet, wondering if it even needs to be watched and she thinks if it was her, she’d run. she has run before, does it quite frequently, and even now she’s technically on the run. 

          she’d bore much easier in the moment if she hadn’t reached out to pet the cat, curious enough to see how friendly it is and time passes by quicker than she thought it would. then again, she’s not around cats or dogs as much as she’d prefer to be. instead, she’s surrounded by people and it’s a shame, really. animals tend to be more pleasant, more honest, and that’s partly why she’d said what she had to him in the first place. that, and he’s a man. that’s reason enough for her to think he must be impure in some sense.

“you sure look the part,” he gives jongin a lopsided grin, leaning upon the counter with a hand upon his chin. “but worry not, our coffee will give you that little energy boost you need for the day!”

seokmin usually knows better than to initiate small talk with a customer. most people that come to a coffee shop is either running without sleep, hasn’t had their morning coffee yet, or completely done with their lives for the day. but this one–jongin, if he remembers correctly–reminds him of a bear just coming out of his hibernation.

which is why he can’t help but to reach out and ruffle the other’s hair gently. “don’t forget to take a break in once in a while, understand? being sick won’t help your productivity level, y’know.”

sleepless nights often occur in this line of profession, the after dark parentheses cusping the weight of covert endeavours. a costumed hitman clad in all black certainly doesn’t belong in the broad daylight, and he’s well aware of this aspect of the double life that he’s leading. it’s part of the consequences, and he cannot make any detour around it. all that he has to do is deal with it, sleeping until late to the point where mornings feel like a fleeting illusion. today, however, he has to tackle his civilian job, and for that, he has been stumbling through the business. he’s smart enough, sure, but working with an accumulating headache has never boded well with anyone. and so, nursing the pain in his head all morning, he eventually makes time for a good break, visiting one of the usual places.

the café isn’t as quiet as expected. alas, can’t have everything going his way, so he meanders towards the queue line either way. he composes a smile at seokmin, whom he’s known pretty well at this point. sure, the man might seem harmless, but jongin doesn’t trust anyone fully in this city. a definite mistake that amateurs could’ve committed — he’s not falling for anything when he doesn’t feel anything. still, a permanent innocence on his disguise, complaining at seokmin for being exhausted. he’s met with an understanding gesture, hair ruffled. he chuckles a bit at that. “i feel like a child again whenever you do this, you know?” he says amicably. “i’m taking my break... but i’ve not gotten enough sleep nowadays. that’s why i trust your coffee, right?” he hums. “what are you going to do after work? we haven’t hung out for quite some time.”

          she wasn’t here to visit that cat, that’s what she told herself when she made the decision to visit this particular cafe. felines bring back unwanted memories, vague ones at that, ones she isn’t quite too sure of when she thinks back on it. maybe it hadn’t been a cat at all and her recollection is completely off but still   —   eunmi considers herself more of a dog lover, always has been, and to this day she still wants a dog although she knows she’s better off not having one ( as in the dog is better off not being hers ). 

          there’s something about the more gentle affection of a cat, though, that speaks more to her soul than she realizes. something about how the cat is quiet in its approach, subtle in how it circles around the base of the table and her chair before rubbing against her leg, only offering a soft purr when eunmi reaches a hand down to pet its head, nails lightly scratching behind its ear. 

          she’d say she wasn’t here for the cat and certainly not its owner but both carried a certain warmth to their personalities that she was lacking. she’d say it wasn’t for that   —   wouldn’t be the first time she lied.

She had played that scene a million times in her head. It would’ve been an abandoned secret location, brought daylight, the sun shining through the large windows so she could see his whole face.

“I wonder If I would recognize him.” She says that randomly before she actually answers the question. Her mind already within that moment that she had dreamed about so many times for months. “Maybe he got a new haircut? Good for him.” She nods at the image, but then drops the scenario thoroughly to look Seokmin in the eyes and finally consider the words she would say to her best friend,

“I would’ve asked him why he didn’t trust me, and just why?” Why did you leave me? Why didn’t you take me with u? Why did you join that gang? There were many questions, but the one thing she would say to him for sure was, “I might have lost you, but you never lost me because I love you no matter what you do.” And also she would’ve punched him in the face really hard because that’s what he also very much deserved from her.

“i didn’t, at first,” he admits, though he really was a baby then. just barely grasping adolescence, the smallest of the crew, the widest eyes and the softest cheeks. “i thought it was mean that they all called me ‘baby’, i wanted to prove that i wasn’t just some kid. but they meant it affectionately just as much as teasingly, so i’ve kinda learned to love it.” he smiles, glowing with some misplaced sense of pride. “so i like it when the crew calls me baby. anyone else wouldn’t get what it means, so not so much.”
