the man who got her pregnant first appeared in the golden apple as a fruit fly. an annoying and self-important man, he had insulted the bookstore’s owner (our robin), and had been kicked out only to return again--three times!--under the guise of begging for forgiveness (his true mission, of course, was to conquer the robin). he had flowers delivered, brought chocolates and ribbons, and eventually the bookshop owner gave in and agreed to go out. 

they moved in together, and he proposed. she taught him how to read tarot and he made a modest living offering card readings to the bookshop’s customers, all the while focusing on whittling and playing his own recorders. she was superior to him in every way, and yet he had convinced her she was beholden to him. when she shared with him the Good News--there would be a baby bird soon--she was met with feigned joy. during month 6, the man told the robin that he had given himself a reading and the cards couldn’t have been more clear: she would raise the child alone, and he was free to fly away and remain untethered to this earth. she smashed his recorders, burned his cards, and shrieked like the best banshee she could imitate and then he was gone. 

the night before their mother went into labor, she walked by the river, over the snow and the ice, late late at night. glancing up, she saw the aurora borealis for the first time.

‘mixter’ is great as a formal gender neutral name because 1. it provides another option for those who feel uncomfortable with “mister”, “miss”, “ma'am”, etc. 2. it sounds like you’re a badass DJ.

The Oxford English Dictionary is hoping to fill a void in the non-gender conforming community by introducing the gender-neutral title "Mx."

Thanks OXFORD. But i’ve been using this for a while. and so have other folx.
