Can we talk about the logical fallacy around conservatism "needing to exist" to ensure "progress happens at a measured rate"?
Firstly, if it weren't for the fact that the conservative government of the United States is literally a Neo Nazi Party, and if it weren't for the fact that the rise of conservative movements around the world is also being tied to the rise of fascism, white supremacy, the weakening of certain rights and the general dehumanization bordering on genociding of certain minorities — i'd be inclined to believe that.
...Except, it also doesn't make any sense to hamper progress that has been shown to genuinely help people.
The arguments i've seen is that "not all progress is good progress" and that "conservatism helps progress not happen so blindsightingly quickly"— But something about it is bugging me, can anyone help me? Why IS Conservatism in any way necessary? IS it necessary?
i think many people don't understand that nazis were progressive bc people consider progressive as something automatically "good". nazis weren't conservative, they were reactionary and progressive. They wanted to change the future and quickly. Progressivism is literally just changing and shifting the goal post of any movement. First it could be restricting jews' basic freedoms (bc they thought that was good for the public), next it could be concentration camps (even better for the public?). But the goal never stops, nothing is ever enough. This goes for other progressive movements as well such as queer rights (marriage rights first, then trans rights, ... then maybe ai girlfriend rights?). All these people have an idea of the perfect future for everyone (=their people) and the movement literally can't stop progressing by nature. Historically fascism has risen to power bc of the weak conservative parties, people being blamed and shamed for their ethnic group and general public being dissatisfied with progressive left movements and their lack of clear morals.
"…Except, it also doesn't make any sense to hamper progress that has been shown to genuinely help people." but that's why we have democracy so politicians with different views can together think whether something is actually helpful. You would think it's so simple to tell if something is helpful or not but that is very simplistic thinking. It's rarely so nice and easy but of course there are some clever people who think they are always on the good side and know what is good for everyone.
The idea behind conservatism being a "safety brake" is rooted in conservatism having solid unchanging values in oppose to progressivism or liberalism. So if there's for example a conservative western feminist they will hold onto their belief on women's safety on the streets very tightly even when it means not everyone is happy about it all the time. If you have a progressive western feminist they might think it's more important to open borders (equality for all people to inhabit as they please) than assure women's safety even if crimes against (lower economic class) women would increase. the latter feminist of course doesn't want to admit that there are places outside of the west where women can't walk safely on the streets bc that would contradict their value system. they just hold onto the utopian ideas for the future ("rape wouldn’t exist if we destroy western hetero cisnormative patriarchy" or "all cultures are equal, rape is just more common in poor third world countries bc they don't know better) even when that would hurt women right now. The western progressive feminist can technically after time start supporting something that is a polar opposite to the western conservative feminist views like sharia law bc currently it's progressive to support islam uncritically.
Also progressivism is not same as liberalism. Liberalism asks: “How do we protect individual freedom?” while progressivism asks: “How do we improve society and fix unfair systems?”. The problem with the latter is that progressivism never stops so even if a great new milestone has been achieved, the progress goes further, can rip apart the previous system that worked and result in worse system. Simple example of this is my country's (Finland) education system. We had the top ten in Pisa results during early 2000's but politicians thought we need to move to fully digitalised learning bc "progress" and now the results are going worse and worse bc it turns out humans learn better when they can make real notes and touch books instead of being online 24/7. So I would argue that by default having someone wanting to "keep things as they are" in politics results in wiser discussion whether changing something is smart or not.
ok yes the misplaced nostalgic yearning for a mythical past is clearly a reactionary position, but simply flipping the valences and replying that Everything Back Then Was Worse Actually is just as superficial an engagement with history
the presumption of progress over time misleads with respect to the vast amount of variation in the historical record & it also serves to present whatever is the current arrangement as the apotheosis of human advancement... these are not value-neutral claims
people who follow progressive movements have sometimes really hard time understanding that progress is not necessary good. Progress doesn't automatically mean "more human rights" or "less wars". We have been pushed to think the very word means something positive by default. But progressivism is simply about changing the goal post forever. The queer activists of the 20's would have been right against gay marriage bc they viewed marriage as an oppressive heteronormative institution. Right now we, who were/are rallying for gay marriage, are usually opposed to people marrying AI's or animals. what we don't like to admit is that we will be the future bigots bc progressivism never stops, it literally can't by design. So my fellow millennials and zoomers, we will be called conservatives if we talk against marrying AI girl friends or donkeys in the future, we will be the ones to be cancelled. I hope you guys are prepared for that bc I for one, feel just crazy thinking about it. And no, there's no "common sense" that stops these things from happening. That kind of talk is will be the proof that you are a conservative bigot wine aunt of the future.
It needs to be more taboo for people to use traditional marxist symbolism, especially the kinds of symbols associated with the USSR.
The kinds of human rights abuses that mainstream Marxism engaged in are horrific, and not worthy of glorification.
The outright denial of Marxist atrocities common on the far left is shocking and astounding.
The way modern communist and socialist parties slap "ironic" USSR imagery all over everything they produce does not fill me with confidence in their ability (or even desire) to avoid the violence caused by that regime.
I honestly think the epidemic of adults who refuse to engage with media not made for children is having never been taught to have patience with a story or to reflect on what it’s trying to tell you, art appreciation is very much a learned skill you have to train. I *understand* the appeal of easy to digest media but unfortunately you cannot get past any concepts deeper than surface level without some level of analysis which is not expected in younger audiences.
This isn’t to say that children’s media can never tell good or enjoyable stories I think they absolutely can but if you only consume children’s media you will miss out on the full spectrum of ideas story telling can offer. And I think an unwillingness to engage with media you do not have to learn or be patient with has lead to the achetypification of fandom spaces, many people no longer feel deep connections to a particular character but rather a flavour of blorbo which is leading to a stagnation of fandom interpretation of characters also, as rather than taking time to consume and digest media the most basic category of type of character is being applied instead.
This recent emergence in fandom is what I feel is leading to the extremely prevalent treatment of any character as “sad tragic backstory man” “too pure cinnamon roll” and “bitch woman” as the only thing a character in media can ever be foregoing any nuanced themes or morality in a way that actively discourages having any interesting thoughts about a character or story.
TL;DR fandom spaces are becoming stagnant because many people are unwilling to digest media and instead skim for an archetype they enjoy and apply that instead.
hey, could I ask for more info/source for miyazaki being an imperial apologist? admittedly I don't know much about him tbh but based on what I read, it seems he's known to show anti-imperialist sentiments consistently (I read some articles dating at least a decade back and some recent ones) i just wanted to know if there's something I missed
Miyazaki’s ‘anti-war’ stance isn’t anti-imperialist. It’s just anti-losing. He expresses zero remorse for Japan’s empire or the fact that his family built those war planes. He was only upset that the war hurt Japanese people. That’s not being anti-imperialist, that's just nationalism with a sad face.
If Miyazaki regretted Japanese imperialism, he won't make The Wind Rises. Imagine a German filmmaker making a tender biopic of the Messerschmitt’s engineer then claiming it’s anti-war.
I think that's a misunderstanding of the themes of A Wind Rises.
The *entire film* is about the tragedy of art being coopted by the military industrial complex, how it twists beauty to suit its own ends.
As the protagonist says about halfway through "we could get it to fly, if only we took out the guns".
And he does express remorse for Japanese Empire? He's been calling for reservations for the Korean "Comfort Women" for decades, among other things, and has been viciously opposed to efforts to try to conquer the Pacific again.
He was only upset that the war hurt Japanese people. That’s not being anti-imperialist, that's just nationalism with a sad face. <- thats the wind rises
see, the thing is, presenting ppl who Were Key In The Making Of Death Machinery as poor unfortunate souls misused by the Faceless Government IS imperialist propaganda
What was that bit from Why Does He Do That?
There. A microcosm of how fascist propaganda works. Once "war is good!" is over, propaganda just takes another form. Stories like The Wind Rises and "why wont anyone think abt the fascist collaborator's feefees" are just a distraction. It's important not to lose sight of the humanity of those we fight as anti-fascists, but for SOME mysterious reason, the humanity of these men's victims is ignored in movies like The Wind Rises and Oppenheimer (and other so-called "anti-war" films).
it's always funny to come back to tumblr to see who we are cancelling baselessly today without any sources. but hey, i'm sure your gut feelings are right and you really value truth over psychology.
In his own words:
“During the war, Japanese forces committed terrible atrocities, killing countless civilians. As Japanese people, we must never forget this. It is something that will remain forever,”
‘Japan Committed Terrible Atrocities’: Hayao Miyazaki Reflects On Country’s War Crimes At Ramon Magsaysay Award Ceremony
“I was born in 1941… and had a strong feeling in my childhood that we had ‘fought a truly stupid war’. Many times… I heard adults speak boastfully of the horrible things they had done on the Chinese continent. At the same time, I also heard about the extent of the horrors of the air raids [on Japan]. I heard many stories and I started to think that I had been born in a country that had done stupid things and I truly started to hate Japan.”
"Miyazaki describes the national culture of wartime as “hysteria”, driven by government and military elites, but remaining an object of responsibility and necessary reflection for civilians as well. During the war, Miyazaki’s father was the manager of a factory that made military airplane parts. His father, he reports, was not a patriot. ... Nevertheless, Miyazaki recalls arguing bitterly with his father as a teenager, “trying to get him to acknowledge his war responsibility.” In the Neppu article, Miyazaki clearly places responsibility on the “militarist government” for leading Japan to violent expansion and then to ruin, but also interrogates the war responsibility of his family and by extension, the wider civilian population. Kaze Tachinu protagonist Horikoshi, an engineer who had no choice but to work for the military if he wanted to continue to design airplanes, is seen by Miyazaki as an important figure for understanding the pressures felt by civilians in wartime and grasping “just how messed-up this country really was.”
Miyazaki Hayao and the Asia-Pacific War
@apocalypsegay
i'm also a weeaboo, that's true. there's self deprecation there.
I think that what is seen in Howl's Moving Castle is fairytale like naive optimism fitting the story which is a highly romantic fantasy. We know Miyazaki in his own life is quite pessimistic person so I think maybe his films are wishes he dares to make despite.
The modern "demand" for simple clear answers doesn't often make good art in my opinion. this doesn't mean that war crimes should be excused but op's claims "Miyazaki’s ‘anti-war’ stance isn’t anti-imperialist. It’s just anti-losing. He expresses zero remorse for Japan’s empire or the fact that his family built those war planes." are very heavy accusations (hence I call it cancelling) and has implications as if the films should have some explicit line delivering "i'm so sorry my family was part of this" as a hammered message. Usually in the media made for adults the writers avoid spoon-feeding the audience with moral teachings and instead trust the people to think these questions for themselves. Miyazaki's children's films are also less black and white compared to disney films for example.
I think the antiwar stance is quite clear in the Wind Rises but maybe to some people it's too "gentle" to the domestic audience despite the stir it caused. People in leftist circles also tend to look at all nationalism as fascist and don't understand the healthy appreciation people have for their own ethnic group, that is only reserved for the "oppressed". But a Japanese person doesn't need to explicitly hate themself, or Japanese people + nation to atone for the past sins in history, it's more important to learn and be aware of the past. And don't get me wrong, there's lots of japanese imperialism apologia in anime like I've criticised fmab a lot for this. I just really dislike heavy accusations with zero proof especially when the op has already doubled down from the looks of it. I wrote this reply before you blocked me so I had to do this to answer bc I hate to write for nothing.

Miyazaki Hayao and the Asia-Pacific War
When iranians say they want Iran to get rid of Arabic names, use native Iranian names, get rid of Arabic words in the language, Arab supremacists immediately latch onto us and say “b-but Arabic is the language of islam and quran! It is the most important! It will be spoken in Jannah! How dare you!! Allah will not be happy!” Okay I don’t care. It’s so obvious you’re using Islam to uphold Arab supremacy and force people to remain assimilated into Arab culture.
I could say the same thing with somalis as well 💀 somalis are so arabized to the point they deny being black and say we're Arab, so they can feel closer to Islam and the prophet 🤦♀️ older somali women are easily spotted in public because they wear abaya and jilbaab
friendly reminder that the term “islamophobia” was popularized by iranian fundamentalists who intended it to be used as a tool of manipulation. those who flippantly throw around the term as an accusation of racism against muslims forget that there is no such thing as a muslim race—just like there is no such thing as a christian race. christianity and islam are both belief systems, and those belief systems are practiced by people across every ethnicity.
unlike judaism, christianity and islam are religions that rely on proselytism (the practice of converting others) to survive. criticism of christianity, and of its ideas that have the potential to be dangerous to free and democratic societies, is never labeled as racism. the idea that critiquing a system of beliefs is somehow racist or xenophobic is preposterous.
so why is it deemed okay to slap an accusation of “islamophobia” onto anyone who dares question the morality of concepts like jihad (‘holy war’ against non-believers)?
criticizing islam is not criticizing the entire arab race—it’s questioning a system of ideas. it’s asking whether free and open societies can afford to accept and promote religious ideals that allow for violent, oppressive, and imperialist interpretations.
and, in case it wasn’t clear, if you read this post and immediately jump to accuse me of being anti-muslim or islamophobic, you’re part of the problem.
“for muslims,” says sam harris, “muhammad is the greatest person who has ever lived. unfortunately, he did not behave like jesus or buddha—at all. it sort of matters that he tortured people and cut their heads off and took sex slaves, because his example is meant to inspire his followers for all time.”
just some food for thought.
If you said nothing about the tens of thousands of people the Islamic Republic massacred last month but suddenly care about Iranian lives now that this occupying regime is under attack, your so-called concern is actually performative. It was never about humanity and dignity for you; it's about ideology, and in this case, your ideology has driven you to the side of dictators and terrorists.
#that said I am very worried for Iranian civilians#I heard that the US may have hit a girls school?#please don't let that be true
Hey, thanks for your response! I just wanted to add some context here.
The "school attack" has actually been debunked on several levels as regime propaganda. In general, the regime is pulling a stunt of wanting to embed itself among civilians to maximize civilian casualties, which is a violation of international law.
In this case of this school, an account with familiarity this this has posted the following tweet:
Someone else has also pointed out that the only footage of this event has come from the regime, suggesting that this is something that has been set up or being mischaracterized for propaganda purposes.
Thank you for the information, I knew there was a decent chance it was an IR misdirection, but I'm devastated that the school was hit. That makes me even more terrified for civilians if the IRGC is launching bombs from residential areas. I hope the regime falls as fast as possible.
Thank you so much!
Ah shit. I knew they were lying abou it being Israel but I hoped they were lying about a school being hit at all.
This exact hypocrisy has been pointed out by some Iranians on socials, but then their posts were taken out of context (ALMOST ENTIRELY CROPPED) by regime shills to manipulate their audience.
This exact hypocrisy is what I have seen from self-declared feminists and leftists. They have been busy posting anything & everything about Evil Israel the last few years. And obviously about the Evil Colonial Country and Evil Colonial System we Must Smash, that they happen to live in. And of course anything bad that happens to a Muslim because "Islamophobia"?
BUT not a peep out of these feminists about Woman Life Freedom. Nor Iranians now. Nothing. Silence.
These ARE their true colours.
@brightmind.history
Have you ever been in Pride or other LGBT events and found yourself confused by Palestine or Soviet Union Flags? Are you familiar with the term Red Green Alliance?
Do you ever just want to scream bc how insane it is for LGBT people and feminists to join this cause.
Schoolgirls in Iran in protest against the regime sticking their middle fingers to Khomeini and Khamenei
Sad that they’ll probably be killed for this
And the West will say sweet fuck all
“The protesters in Iran are burning MOSQUES!!”
Islam isn’t the indigenous religion of Iran. Zoroastrianism is. Islam only arrived in the 7th century due to violent conquests. Persians didn’t choose to convert from the faith of their ancestors, they were violently forced to.
What’s wrong, “free Palestine” crowd? I thought you guys supported decolonization???
I have the feeling that it’s coming from the same people who whitewash islamist colonialism in the Middle East and North Africa as well as Ottoman colonialism in the Caucasus and the Balkans.
Listen to this Iranian woman, please. Hear her out, all the way through.
We need to talk about the false narrative around the Iranian people’s revolution.
Some Western leftist media/ figures refuse to support the ongoing revolution in Iran because they believe regime change would benefit the US and Israel. But what if I told you it benefits Iranian people?
We are against the Islamic regime. We want secularism. That is the one thing uniting everyone in the streets. We come from different backgrounds and groups, and we may have different visions for Iran’s future, but we are united against this regime.
This is not new. We have risen up before — in 2009, 2019, 2022, and many times before that.
The Islamic regime has killed more people in three days than Israel has killed in twelve days in Iran. You must understand: the Islamic regime is the enemy of Iranian people too. This regime is killing people to survive, accusing protestors of being connected to Israel or the US, while they are all Iranians demanding freedom.
It has been almost two days the internet was cut off in Iran. The last time this happened, during the bloody November of 2019, the regime killed 1,500 people within 3 days in silence.
Please do not fall for the regime’s narrative. This is a people’s revolution.
saying you support the Iranian people and their "protests against their government" is not enough, and is just western lefties half-assing their words because they are too scared to speak the truth.
the Iranian people are standing up against the islamic REGIME and the demon that is ali khamenei.
the regime that has oppressed and actively oppresses every wake of their lives, that has colonized their lands, chokes out every freedom for their women, and forced islamic law onto their people. this is not some silly protest against taxes. it is an uprising of a people who have been tortured under the regime.
death to the islamic regime. death to the ayatollah. freedom for every iranian and their culture, their people, and their way of life. may iranian women have the right to basic dignity returned to them.
if you don't have the guts to say this, to speak out against the islamic regime and what it has done, your half-baked post means nothing.
i think most western leftist have caught this brain rot logic that bc Palestinian civilians are killed by Israel -> their victim status means they are automatically morally good* -> Hamas (jihadist Islamist organisation Palestinians vote into power) is against Israel (= the oppressor) -> Islamism is morally good too, also in Iran.
So now they support blindly Islamism even when Islamism is the polar opposite to gay, trans, women etc rights. They have taken Pro Palestine into the LGBT movement even when there's zero common ground with conservative muslims and gays+trans people. People have forgotten that they can be against blatant murder of civilians in Palestine and still not explicitly support organisations that are literally against their own movement. But no. They double down so not only some of these Pro Palestine people unwittingly support Hamas, they are going to support Iran's Islamic regime too.
*if people want to know more about this phenomenon of using victimhood to signal virtue I recommend to read about Virtuous Victim Effect.
