These GBA SP-like handhelds are getting better all the time. At this point, it feels like their manufacturers are adding random flaws just to make sure they don't get too good.
I realise retro gaming is a very well explored hobby, but I'm making cautious steps in, via a cute handheld Miyoo Flip.
One of the menu items took me to some (wonderful) "Pico-8" games. They clearly aren't from the 80's, so I looked into it.
PICO-8 is an "imaginary console" with a strict set of limitations, deliberately designed to be simple, fun, and to encourage creativity. Its key limitations (its "hardware specs") are:
Display: 128x128 pixels.
Colors: A fixed palette of 16 vibrant colors.
Sprites: A 128x128 pixel sprite sheet (where you draw all your game's graphics).
Sound: A 4-channel chiptune synthesizer for creating sound effects and music.
Code: Games are programmed in Lua, a very beginner-friendly language, but you're limited by the amount of code you can write (a "token" and character limit).
Cartridge Size: A finished game must fit within a tiny 32KB "cartridge" file.
The magic of PICO-8 is that these constraints, which sound restrictive, actually make it easier to finish a game. You can't get bogged down with overly ambitious ideas; you have to focus on making a small, fun, and complete experience.
I really want to have a go at making a Pico-8 game!

Just beat pokemon fire red on mah miyoo flip. I started playing it on my phone and I transferred my save data super easy cause retroarch is chill like that. Ty emulation we love you emulation!
the elite four was not fucking around this game too, you gotta make sure that your pokemon are BEEFY or else...
Observe the champs!
UnderWhere was a late addition to the team that I power leveled from like level 5 with macho brace and as far as I can tell has no attack EV's and is now an absolute power house, it was so very worth it.
Uphog is the MVP on the team! I would consider it to be something of the healer of the team. He can sleep through pokemon induced natural disasters and just so I can burn through the last 4 healing items mid-battle. Sleep Well, O' Champion!
Superball is my favorite don't tell the others. Cross-Chop is also my new favorite move because of this fuzzy round thing with an eternal flame of rage and unending violence backing every decision.
I still haven't named Arcanine but that should change eventually. This dude clutched against my rival's Charizard cause of its flash fire ability, that was sick. Super well balanced stats this ouppy has much potential.
Pop Shuvit, my favorite name on here. Poison type exterminator! And every thing else. Actually has a pretty high attack stat. Headbutt goes hard feel free to FLINCH AGAINST ITS MIGHT.
Player ONE was not as strong as I thought it would be, but I think that was my fault...
I really liked the difficulty but idk if i would do it again, one go on that ride was enough for me. but ye bangin ass game would recommend
I finally got a Miyoo Flip, and I’m really impressed with the quality of it, and the absolute maddening range of games it comes with! Just 1 thing, am I stupid or is the TS card impossible to remove?
I've been off tumblr more ever since i got my legally distinct gameboy
Lookit mah boy!
It plays SA2, I have a chao garden in my pocket! How could i have time to post when I must feed my children various gemstones and fruits
Miyoo flip is available for order again!
