I've been practicing some moves in my unfinished cosplay so I'll look like someone who know what to do with katana when the cosp will be ready.

time for HAKAMAAA

I made this meme specially for this occasion, because there's nothing better that shows how I felt during the process of figuring out what Mizu has on her legs and how to sew that.

But first

Also a little ✨ disclaimer ✨ I'm not any kind of specialist in history fashion of Edo period, I just want to share with you what I found out for now, but I'm willing to learn and I'm open for any kind of advice

So

What is Mizu wearing? Tattsuke bakama of course.

Answer seemed pretty easy until I dived further into the topic. And things got only more and more complicated.

In some close up shots we can clearly see that these puffy pants and leg wraps are totally separate things. Pants also have characteristic cuffs at the bottom.

And it has to be that way so Mizu can take off these wraps and weights hidden underneath. And when she do we see another pair of leg wraps, lighter in colour and with some pattern.

Ok, so we know they're two pairs of leg wraps called kiahan

But what these cuffed knee length and extremely puffed pants are? And how it should look like irl.

I stumped upon something called Monpe

Trope seemed good, "working pants" ended with cuffs. But it turned out it's typical women's wear (so obviously Mizu couldn't wear that since she tried so look as manly as possible) and they're full length :/

So I had to leave that trope behind and search another.

Then I find about Kobakama

Short, cuffed pants worn by Samurai under armour

Only problem I had with them was lack of puffiness, which Mizu pants have a looot, and it's crucial element that shapes her characteristic silhouette.

Having this as some plan B in the back of my mind I continued my research.

I learned about sooo many types of hakama, and it's history, but nothing really fits. I won't bring it here because it's too long but I have to show you at least one

Nagabakama

Extremely long version oh hakama, wore by people of high status as part of ceremonial outfit, long legs was designed to make walking difficult, so everybody will know they have too much money :). Well, I suppose "the more impractical outfit the more richer the owner" is an universal thing.

However it seems I have to end this post here, because it urned out I can't put more than 10 photos in one post in app :ccc
