Interview: The Deaf (ENG)
Kit and Spike hanging out on the lawn.
The Deaf are a garage rock band from Den Haag, Holland. Bastian Baker, a Swiss pop singer, personally asked them to come and play Montreux Jazz Festival. Their set was wild and sweaty, and Spike even smashed his guitar. The band is slowly getting more well-known across Europe, and they even played SXSW in the US a few years ago! I joined them for an interview a few hours before their set on the lakeside in Montreux. We talk about their beginnings, their influences, their second album The Deaf, their life in Holland and more.
Firstly, I wanted to know what made you start The Deaf. I saw many interviews of you guys on the internet, but they were all in Dutch so I had no idea what they were saying. I apologize in advance if you’ve heard these questions a million times!
Spike van Zoest: No problem, it’s our first time here. No actually, it’s our second. But it’s our first interview in Switzerland, so you can ask every cliché question you’ve got up your sleeve!
Miss Fuzz: Well, we started in 2007, so that’s like 9 years ago now. I think the main reason was that one of our favorite bands, Dead Moon, split up. That was an inspiring band, especially for Spike and he had the idea of forming a band in the roots of Dead Moon. And at that same moment I asked him to join me for a jam session in a festival I organized in our hometown, Den Haag in Holland. So that was the perfect opportunity to play together for the first time.
Verena Von Horsten @ Montreux Jazz Festival
Mac Demarco : Hey, merci !
En effet, tu as raison.
Mac : Ouais, j’aime bien jusqu’ici.
Interview: Mac Demarco (ENG)
Mac after our interview in Montreux. His cigarettes on the left, all my stuff on the right.
About two years ago, I sent an email to Mac Demarco using an address found on his Bancamp (unfortunately it’s not there anymore), asking him if he could answer a few questions. I was very surprised to actually get an answer from Mac himself! (here is our short email interview) Needless to say that I was very enthusiastic about meeting him in Montreux this summer, a few hours before his concert with Kurt Vile - who joined him on stage - and the Allah-Las. In this interview, we talk about Mac’s house in New York, his album Another One and his legendary sense of humor.
Hi Mac, welcome to Montreux! Do you like it here?
Mac Demarco: Hey, thank you! We sound checked and then we went to the hotel, but I saw a pretty good view of the… It’s a lake, right?
Yup! Léman, or Geneva Lake.
Mac: So the lake, and the mountains… It’s a pretty beautiful place! Also, it seems pretty fancy.
You’re right, it is.
Mac: Yeah, I like it so far.
Before we talk about your latest record, I wanted to know what your life was like in New York. I guess it has changed a lot over the last two or three years right?
Mac: I guess so, yeah. I’ve been living here for about three years now. I lived in Brooklyn for a year and I moved out to Rockaway Beach. I’ve been living here for two years now. I put my address on the album, so I have a lot of visitors all the time. I’m moving to Los Angeles very soon. It’s interesting because when I was in Brooklyn, I was sort of in the middle of the shit. And I moved to Rockaway and just stopped seeing everybody altogether. I kind of stopped going to the city. I would go to Long Island, Queens or whatever a lot more often. Which I think is what made me actually- I liked New York before, but I REALLY love New York now, you know. But for the weird shit, not for the stuff that everybody- I mean, Manhattan is cool. But weird parts, I like that. Jamaica, Queens, that’s great.
