Raphael Design update
As promised, the art of Raphael has received 3+ likes and I'm back with a lore post
RAPHAEL: Emmissary of the Eldergods
Raphael was created for the soul purpose of defending Earthrealm from Outside threats, prior to Liu Kang, who had still been keeper of time. Raphael had the ability to split open gateways to the realms, allowing him to harmlessly defeat foes and send them back from where they came. However, he had anger issues which made him prone to acting on his own impulse. Despite this, he found clarity in what he did, knowing he had made the Eldergods proud doing what he did.
However, once Lord Liu Kang and Empress Sindel have announced the grand tournament between Earthrealm and the realm of Outworld, and once Liu Kang became defender of Earthrealm, the Eldergods have abandoned Raphael and left him like a desk toy you never got rid of and never used. This infuriated the Archangel, but did he act on that? No. Did he attempt to confront his creators? No. But once, once when Liu Kang went to consult to the Eldergods, the Fire God mentioned a Saurian and a Demon had joined their party. This enraged the Archangel....everything he believed in, everything he was told, everything he stood for...as if it hadn't mattered.
In his fury, Raphael fleed from this oppressed place he once called his home and began to roam the realms in search of demons and fiends to slaughter, disregarding how he were to approach the task, and how much blood he would need to spill.
Design aspects
His design is heavenly inspired by my first (successful) OC, Red Robin. A more modernized, humanized bird like look for the angel. I had given him a helmet/mask of sorts that vaguely resembles Robin's, giving it the ability to open and reveal his true form. However, doing such a thing would reduce the layman to ash, and the angel prefers it a more fair battle.
His wings were modeled after the Ben 10 Alien Force alien, Big Chill, which had large wings he could fly with and wrap around himself like a cloak. I had also given him the same eye design that I made when I drew this art of my other Angel OC, Azrael
And finally, his weapon. The only real inspiration for the weapon I had for him was the filipino long sword, the Kampilan which is so cool to me and thought it would fit best for him because he is kinda the opposite of Ashrah, seeing as she uses a Kriss, which is also a Filipino blade which was a more ceremonial dagger while the Kampilan was primarily weapon (by the way, if I get any of this wrong and enrage any Filipino or indigenous people, I'm sorry, I'm not a history major and I get my sources off of quick Google searches for references)
Lore finale
Ironically, Raphael was stated to be an archangel of healing in the Catholic belief, while in the Islamic belief (where he is called Israfil) he is titled the angel who will blow the trumpet on the day of judgement. So I did the next best thing and made him a rage-blinded hero with a superiority complex.
He wants to get rid of the injustice that this world has brought upon itself, but his methods are so unethical that they make me question my own sanity imagining it. So in the weirdest way possible, he's kind of like AM from Harlan Ellison's I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream but the opposite. He was forged to fight and protect, abandoned and given sentience and left alone with his own thoughts. So once he hears Ashrah, a Demon, dressed in a Gold and White attire who is attempting to purge the evil from her soul, he snaps, going after anything evil that moves. Avoiding any of the major villains of Mortal Kombat, going for any cop who was beating on a homeless person, destroying dozens of military equipment with single swings of his blade and slaughtering any person that had committed an act of evil. And what do the God's do? Nothing. Like they always have. They simply sit in their chairs, talk to Liu Kang, and do nothing to stop him. And perhaps once he's done with Earthrealm, he'll head to Outworld to do the same.
