i love the mk21 film a lot because it feels like the home-cooked meal that fanfics are. and i think, for me, it's mostly because of the found family. i think that's what really captivated me and warmed me to it, apart from the liulao bond and cole's unique arcana. you got them all looking out for each other while still bantering with each other.

i was... idk, for the lack of a better term, feeling really seen by it. and now as i'm writing this, it's probably because it's helping me process my grief. perhaps, that is really why. that i'm needing an anchor right now, and the beating heart of mk's story bleeds grief. not as an open wound where people feel shame for your loss. but more like reverence and care and understanding — that even a love so persevering beyond life isn't perfect and linear. that one heartbreak after another doesn't mean the end of life or love. it can continue. it will continue. because you must and you have to. because you want to. so you rest, but you keep going.

i've watched it 3x now and i'm on my way to a 4th once mk26 is available for stream. and i know i watched mk26 first before mk21 but i love mk26 in the sense that it intersected so beautifully with all my core memories — stuff like being raised by a:tla and fmab — and these days, with me gaining more appreciation for cdrama and taichi and stuff. it's like, idk, mk's calling out to me.
